STEPHENVILLE, Texas – The Texan offense stayed red hot Saturday night at the Tarleton State Softball Complex, exploding for 20 runs on 21 hits to defeat Colgate 20-9 and improve to 8-0 on the season.
Tarleton State plated runs in four straight innings, highlighted by a five-run first and an eight-run second, to build a commanding lead early.
The Texans capitalized immediately on a Colgate error to spark a five-run opening frame.
After Hayden Fox reached to begin the inning, Jaelynn Duke lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring home the game's first run. Braylin Pannill followed with a two-RBI double down the left-field line to extend the lead to 3-0.
With runners on, wild pitches allowed two more unearned runs to cross, giving Tarleton State a 5-0 advantage after one.
The Texan bats erupted for eight runs on eight hits in the second inning.
Madison Runyan doubled to left center to score a run before Casey Schultz launched a three-run home run to center field to push the lead to 9-0.
Tarleton State continued to apply pressure with RBI singles from Fox and Macie Vickers, and a bases-loaded walk drawn by Katherine Brunner capped the eight-run outburst, stretching the margin to 13-0.
Colgate got on the board with an RBI groundout in the third, trimming the deficit to 13-1.
The Texans answered with five more runs in the home half of the third.
Alyssa Budisalovich tripled to right center and scored on Scarlett Poore's RBI single. After a sacrifice fly from Riley McDaniel plated another run, Brunner delivered the big blow of the inning — a three-run home run to left center — extending Tarleton State's lead to 18-1.
The Texans added two more runs in the fourth.
Alyson Higginbotham singled and later scored on Mariah Debose's RBI triple to left field. Mikayla Wilson followed with an RBI single to make it 20-1.
Colgate mounted a late rally in the fifth, highlighted by a three-run home run from Mackenzie Lewis and a string of RBI hits, but the Texans closed out the contest to secure the 20-9 victory.
Abigail Dowell earned her first win of the year, striking out six in her four innings of work. She allowed four runs on two hits and four walks.
Tarleton State will close out the Whataburger Invitational on Sunday with a doubleheader against SFA at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
