South Alabama snaps Tarleton State Tennis’ win streak

NATCHITOCHES, La. – South Alabama ended Tarleton State Tennis' five-game match win streak, defeating the Texans 4-3 on Saturday at the Jack Fisher Lady Demon Complex.

The Jaguars won four consecutive singles matches to clinch the match after the Texans clinched the doubles point and a pair of singles matches.

Freshmen Aya Ishii once again shined for the Texans, winning both in singles and doubles. The freshman moved her doubles record to 6-2 and collected her seventh singles win of the season.

After Ishii and freshman Marissa Minetti's 6-3 doubles win on Court 1, South Alabama bounced back to get the win at No. 3 doubles to set up a winner-take-all match at No. 2 doubles. The Texans grabbed the upper hand thanks to the win from sophomore duo Maria Castano and Duru Kuscu 7-5, giving Tarleton State a 1-0 lead in the match.

Ishii helped the Texans take a 2-0 lead in the match thanks to a 7-6, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles. The Japanese freshman has won 14 straight sets and has not lost in singles in over a month.

Sophomore Maria Castano followed suit by collecting a three-set victory at No. 1 singles 1-6, 6-3, 6-1. While the Texans needed just one more point to clinch the match, it was South Alabama that would come out victorious. The Jaguars won four straight singles matches and clinched the deciding point with a three set win at No. 6 singles.

Tarleton State wraps up its road trip at Northwestern State on Sunday at 11 a.m. No live stream or live scoring will be available. Follow Tarleton State Tennis' social media pages for the most up-to-date information.
