ARLINGTON, Texas – Tarleton State Softball opened WAC play on Friday night with a late push, but the Texans came up just short in a 7-6 loss to UT Arlington at Allan Saxe Field.
Tarleton State struck first in the top of the second. Isabella Bojkovic opened the inning with an infield single before Braylin Pannill doubled down the right field line to put two runners in scoring position. Addison Wittram then drove in the game's first run with an RBI single up the middle, and Hayden Fox followed with a sacrifice fly to center to give the Texans an early 2-0 lead.
UT Arlington answered in the bottom of the second on a solo home run to left field, trimming the lead to 2-1.
After a quiet third inning, the Mavericks took control in the bottom of the fourth. After putting two runners aboard, UT Arlington capitalized on a sacrifice bunt that turned into a two-run scoring play after an error, then added a two-run home run later in the frame to jump in front 5-2.
UTA added another run in the fifth on an RBI fielder's choice to stretch the advantage to 6-2.
Tarleton State answered with its biggest inning of the night in the sixth. Casey Schultz led off with a double to deep center and Madison Runyan worked a walk to put two on. Bojkovic then launched a three-run home run to right center to pull the Texans within one. On the very next pitch, Pannill sent a solo shot to deep center, tying the game at 6-6 with back-to-back home runs.
The Mavericks responded in the bottom half of the inning. A leadoff double and passed ball moved the go-ahead run to third, and UT Arlington brought her home on an RBI fielder's choice to retake the lead 7-6.
Tarleton State threatened in the seventh after Jaelynn Duke drew a leadoff walk and the Texans loaded the bases, but UT Arlington turned a key defensive play at the plate during a double play to keep the go-ahead run from scoring and preserve the win.
In the circle, Shelby Schultz got the start and tossed 4.0 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts. Gracie Riney took the loss after allowing two runs in 1.0 inning, while Duke closed the final inning and retired all four batters she faced.
The Texans and Mavericks continue the series on Saturday with a doubleheader at 12 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.
