SAN MARCOS, Texas – Tarleton State Softball fell in both contests on Friday at the San Marcos Showdown, dropping games to the No. 15 Texas A&M Aggies and host Texas State Bobcats at Bobcat Softball Stadium.
With the results, the Texans move to 16-9 overall and finished 2-2 in the tournament.
Texas A&M 15, Tarleton State 2 (5)
Texas A&M jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first inning, plating three runs on a pair of hits to take a 3-0 advantage.
The Aggies added to their lead in the second inning, stringing together several hits and home runs to score six runs and extend the margin to 9-0.
Tarleton State got on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Jaelynn Duke singled to right field to reach base and later came around to score on an RBI groundout from Braylin Pannill, cutting the deficit to 9-1.
Texas A&M responded with another big inning in the third, adding five runs on a combination of hits, walks, and extra-base knocks to push the lead to 14-1. The Aggies earned their final run in the top of the fourth on a groundout to second base.
The Texans plated their second run in the bottom of the fifth. Macie Vickers singled up the middle and later scored on an error to make it 15-2, but the Aggies secured the run-rule victory shortly after.
Texas A&M finished with 14 hits, including three home runs, while the Texans totaled six hits in the contest.
Texas State 8, Tarleton State 2
Tarleton State struck first in the fourth inning. With one out, Duke launched a two-run home run to center, bringing home Vickers and giving the Texans an early 2-0 lead.
The Bobcats rallied back in the sixth inning. Texas State first got on the board with an RBI single from Harley Vestal that scored Karmyn Bass to cut the lead to 2-1. Later in the inning, Chesney Davis delivered a two-RBI single up the middle to put Texas State in front 3-2.
The Bobcats continued to build momentum as Davis later stole second, allowing Sami Hood to score and extend the lead to 4-2. An RBI single from Keely Williams added another run, pushing the advantage to 5-2.
Texas State capped the inning with a three-run home run to left field from Kate Bubela, stretching the lead to 8-2 and sealing the win for the Bobcats.
Duke led the Texans offensively with the two-run home run, while Tarleton State managed just a handful of hits in the contest. The Bobcats' six-run sixth inning proved to be the difference as Texas State pulled away late.
The Texans will return home to face No. 2 Texas Tech on Tuesday at the Tarleton State Softball Complex. More information will be released soon.
