STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Shelby Schultz continues to stack up weekly honors for Tarleton State Softball, as the sophomore left-hander was named WAC Pitcher of the Week for the second consecutive week on Monday after another dominant stretch in the circle. Schultz claimed her third conference pitcher of the week honor this season and fourth weekly recognition overall after helping lead the Texans to a series sweep of Utah Tech.
The Texans have now claimed WAC Pitcher of the Week honors in four consecutive weeks, continuing Tarleton State's dominance in the circle during conference play.
Tarleton State Softball secured their third straight conference series sweep, defeating Utah Tech in a three-game showdown following a midweek loss to non-conference North Texas. TSU opened their final home series with a doubleheader sweep on Friday (2-1 and 8-3), taking both games to clinch the series and their spot in the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The Texans closed out the weekend in decisive fashion Saturday, run-ruling Utah Tech 11-0 in five innings.
Schultz turned in another standout performance in the circle for Tarleton State, anchoring the pitching staff with a 2-0 record, one save and a dominant 0.57 ERA across 12.1 innings of work. Schultz appeared in three of the Texans' four games, making two starts while tossing nearly half of the team's total innings for the week. She struck out 16 batters, walked just two, and limited opponents to a .128 batting average, allowing only one run all week. Schultz also recorded one complete game and closed out game two against Utah Tech with the final inning to earn a save. In the series finale, she added 4.1 scoreless innings before handing the ball off for the final two outs, capping an impressive all-around stretch in the circle.
Another strong week only added to what has already been an impressive season for Schultz. The Temple, Texas native currently leads the team with 110 strikeouts, logging 133.1 innings across 31 appearances with 22 starts, 12 complete games, 16 wins and three saves while holding opponents to a .259 batting average.
The Texans will travel to Lubbock on Tuesday to take on No. 3 Texas Tech with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m.
