STEPHENVILLE, Texas – Back-to-back shutouts and a flawless weekend in the circle earned Tarleton State Softball's Shelby Schultz WAC Pitcher of the Week honors, the conference announced Monday.
This award marks Schultz's second weekly honor in just three weeks. The sophomore was also named D1Softball's Mid-Major Pitcher of the Week following a standout performance against Rhode Island in week seven.
Tarleton State Softball secured its first home conference series win of the season on Friday, clinching the three-game set against Abilene Christian 2-1. The Texans opened the series with an 8-0 run-rule victory on Thursday before edging the Wildcats 1-0 on Friday to clinch the series. With the series win, Tarleton State improved to 24-17 overall and 3-3 in conference play.
Schultz was a powerhouse in the circle once again, posting a perfect 0.00 ERA across two complete-game shutouts. The left-hander threw 12.0 of Tarleton State's 19.0 innings in the series, limiting Abilene Christian to just four hits while striking out 11. Schultz did not surrender a run or issue a walk and held the Wildcats to a .103 batting average.
The sophomore has continued to be a steady force in the circle for the Texans this season. Schultz leads the team with 72 strikeouts, logging 92.0 innings across 23 appearances with 16 starts, seven complete games, 10 wins and two saves while holding opponents to a .274 batting average.
The Texans will take on North Texas on Wednesday at the Tarleton State Softball Complex with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m. Purple Tarleton State Softball shirts will be available to first arriving fans, while supplies last, as the Texans further prove purple is better than green.
