Tarleton State Volleyball sweeps Prairie View A&M to close Wildcat Classic

TUCSON, Ariz. – Less than 24 hours after Tarleton State Football defeated Prairie View A&M in the Chancellor's Cup, the volleyball team followed suit by sweeping the Panthers 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-19) on Sunday in the final match of the Wildcat Classic at the McKale Center.

Tarleton State forced Prairie View into a .132 attacking percentage and went on an 11-0 scoring run in the third set to secure the sweep. The Texans picked up their first win of the season after dropping their first two matches in 2026.

Freshman outside hitter Jacqui McClain led with a match-high 10 kills to go with 10 digs for her first collegiate double-double. Her double-double made her the first freshman since 2021 to have a double-double in at least one of her first three collegiate matches (Trinity Vinzant). McClain also had five service aces, tying the most by freshman in a match in the Division I era. Tarleton State has had at least one freshman record a double-double in a match for the second straight season.

McClain and fellow freshman Onita Davis were named to the Wildcat Classic All-Tournament Team. Davis had 15 kills in Saturday's match at Arizona, the most by a Tarleton State freshman against a Power 4 opponent.

Setters Alexis Massey (17) and Kingsley Minus (14) both produced double-digit assists once again, with Massey also getting 10 digs for her second collegiate double-double. Libero Leddy Rae Guinn led the Texans in digs with 13.

Tarleton State opened set one with two separate 4-0 scoring runs to take the early advantage. The freshmen took over later in the first set, with Davis and McClain combining for five of six points during a 6-0 scoring run that put the Texans on top 16-5. Prairie View A&M answered with three straight points, but the Texans maintained their double-digit lead thanks to a kill from McClain and a service ace from Massey.

The Panthers eyed a comeback, scoring five of the next six points to cut the Texans' lead in half. A service error ended the Prairie View A&M run before a kill from Davis blocks from Madison Frank and Breannah Peterson allowed Tarleton State to capture the first set.

Prairie View A&M took an early 7-3 lead in the second set before the Texans rallied five straight points to swing the advantage. Kills from McClain and Peterson put the Texans up by four, with blocks from Peterson and Davis continuing the scoring run. A service ace from Frank and a kill from outside hitter LaNeah Lara capped off four straight points.

The Panthers responded by accumulating five of the next six points, but it was Tarleton State who took set two. The Texans scored four of the final five points and finished with a .275 attacking percentage to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Once again Prairie View A&M took the early lead and once again Tarleton State bounced back to take control. A 15-11 Prairie View A&M lead ignited an 11-0 scoring run by Tarleton State that put the Texans up by seven with just three more points needed to clinch.

After Tarleton State got two of the next three points, Prairie View A&M strung together three consecutive points to stay alive. A kill from Lara completed the sweep and sent the Texans home with their first win of 2026.

Tarleton State continues action on the road, traveling to Houston to face Rice on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
