Mean Green defeats Tarleton State Volleyball in first day of UNT Invitational

DENTON, Texas – North Texas defeated Tarleton State Volleyball 3-0 (14-25, 23-25, 14-25) in the first match of the UNT Invitational on Thursday at the North Texas Volleyball Center. 

Tarleton State (3-8, 0-0) was held to an .086 attacking percentage on Thursday. North Texas (6-3, 0-0) had 48 kills to go with a .327 attacking percentage. 

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis had nine kills and senior setter Alexis Massey added 11 assists. Junior libero Leddy Rae Guinn had nine digs to lead the Texans defensively. 

After trading points early in the first set, North Texas grabbed the upper hand. The Mean Green scored seven unanswered points to take a nine-point lead, with back-to-back kills from UNT's Reagan Bedall and an attack error by Tarleton State making it an 11-point set. Two kills from UNT's Lillian Croshaw gave the Mean Green 25-14 set one win. 

A kill and service ace from freshman outside hitter Jacqui McClain got the Texans off to a strong start in the second set. The Texans capitalized on a pair of attack errors, with Davis coming up with a kill later in the set to give Tarleton State a one-point edge. A pair of points from UNT allowed the Mean Green to take the lead before a kill from fifth year outside hitter LaNeah Lara tied it up once again. 

UNT went on a 3-0 scoring run to go out in front, but Tarleton State countered with four unanswered points to take a 21-19 lead later in the set. The Mean Green, however, scored three straight points and scored three of the final four points to take set two 25-23 and lead the match 2-0. 

The Mean Green carried their momentum into the third set, going on an early 4-0 scoring run to go out in front. Following a 4-0 scoring run, UNT scored five of the next six points to take a double digit lead. Three kills by UNT's Alexa Hayes put the Mean Green ahead by 11, with Jahniya Jackson's 17th kill of the match capping off the sweep for UNT.
