West Virginia defeats Tarleton State Volleyball to end non-conference play

DENTON, Texas – Tarleton State Volleyball played its third Big 12 opponent of the season tough, but the Texans fell short to West Virginia (23-25, 22-25, 21-25) on the final day of the UNT Invitational on Saturday at the UNT Volleyball Center.

The Texans (4-9, 0-0) finished with 35 kills, but were held to a .143 hit percentage. West Virginia had 38 kills and a .253 hit percentage in Saturday's win.

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis led with a team-high eight kills with a .316 hit percentage, being named to the UNT Invitational All-Tournament Team in the process. Kingsley Minus (16) and Alexis Massey (14) had double-digit assists again while libero Leddy Rae Guinn added 10 digs defensively.

After scoring the first three points of the match, West Virginia went on an early 4-0 scoring run to take a five-point lead. A kill from fifth year outside hitter/opposite Madison Rice-Locket following a service error made it a one-point set, with the Texans capitalizing off another Rice-Locket kill and a West Virginia attack error to tie the score. West Virginia once again took a four-point lead in the opening set before Tarleton State countered with a 4-0 scoring run to tie it up.

The Mountaineers used a 3-0 scoring run late in the set to make it a set point, but Tarleton State kept it alive with a Davis kill and service ace. West Virginia, however, got the set point with a kill to take the opening frame 25-23.

Following three straight points to open the second set, Tarleton State used a 4-0 scoring run capped off by a service ace to take a 14-11 lead. The Mountaineers answered with a 4-0 scoring run of their own to swing the advantage, but a kill from Davis after a service error allowed the Texans to go back out in front. West Virginia used a pair of 3-0 scoring runs to take the second set 25-22.

Opening with a 6-0 scoring run in the third set, West Virginia used a kill and a Tarleton State attack error to maintain a six-point advantage. Tarleton State refused to go down, scoring three straight points and later going on a 4-0 scoring run to make it a two-point set. West Virginia calmed the scoring run by obtaining three of the final four points to clinch the match.

Tarleton State returns to Wisdom Gym to start United Athletic Conference play next week. The Texans open the UAC era against UT Arlington on Tuesday at 6 p.m., with free ice cream from Baskin Robins being given to fans in honor of National Ice Cream Day. Tickets start at just $10 and can be purchased here. Tarleton State students receive free admission.
