Roadrunners defeat Tarleton State Volleyball in UTSA Invitational

SAN ANTONIO – UTSA defeated Tarleton State Volleyball 3-0 (25-19, 25-12, 25-13) in the UTSA Invitational on Friday night at the Convocation Center.

The Roadrunners (3-2, 0-0) finished with 37 kills to finish hitting .347. Tarleton State (1-4, 0-0) was forced into 26 attack errors with its 27 kills. UTSA picked up its first win over Tarleton State in the Division I era and its first over the Texans since 1983.

Freshman middle blocker Onita Davis led the Texans' attack with nine kills on Friday. Setters Alexis Massey (14) and Kingsley Minus (12) produced double-digit assists once again while libero Leddy Rae Guinn led the team in digs with 16.

After splitting the first 10 points of the first set, UTSA obtained two straight points to take the early lead. Davis helped the Texans answer with a kill that was followed by blocks from middle blocker Alyssa Dinh and opposite Breannah Peterson. The Texans used a 5-0 scoring run to take an 11-8 lead in the first set.

A pair of attack errors and three kills from UTSA allowed the Roadrunners to take the lead later in the first set. Dinh's kill allowed the Texans to stay alive, but UTSA obtained three of the next four points to take the first set 25-19.

Davis came up with back-to-back kills early in the second set to give the Texans the early lead. UTSA, however, responded with a 6-0 scoring run to take control. The Roadrunners used an 8-0 scoring run later in the second set and finished set two hitting .433 to take a 2-0 lead at the break.

Another 5-0 scoring run by the Roadrunners allowed UTSA to take the early lead in the third set. After Tarleton State stopped the scoring run with three consecutive points, UTSA went on another 5-0 run to take control again. UTSA ended the match on a 6-0 scoring run to take the sweep and the second match of its home tournament.

Tarleton State wraps up its road trip and the UTSA Invitational on Saturday at 1 p.m., traveling to Incarnate Word for an afternoon matinee. Saturday's match will be available to watch on ESPN+ and live stats will be available through Stat Broadcast.
