Oscar H. Frazier Memorial Track

Oscar H. Frazier Memorial Track

Track Facility

Completed in 1977, the Oscar H. Frazier Memorial Track was built for a cost of $55,000 and was a seven-lane track. A major facelift was completed in 1989 as the track was expanded to feature an eighth lane in time for Tarleton to play host to the 1990 and 1991 NAIA National Track and Field Championships.

Tarleton’s home track carries the namesake of legendary track and field coach, Oscar H. Frazier. Frazier came to Tarleton in 1925 and began his 40-year coaching career of the men’s track and field team. During his tenure in Tarleton’s junior college era, Tarleton won 19 conference championships and routinely sent Tarleton athletes on to the state’s largest institutions to compete in track and field. Frazier also served his country in World War II after stepping away from coaching to join the army in 1943.

Now with eight lanes and an all-weather surface, Oscar H. Frazier Track borders an artificial turf field and is found inside Memorial Stadium. The stadium is bordered on the east side by brand-new student housing buildings while ample parking can be found on the west side of the stadium. The Dr. Vance Terrell Intramural Fields border the stadium on the north side while the south side is the home of the Tarleton Football Field House and Sports Medicine complex, which features offices, football locker rooms, sports medicine offices, and a training room.

The newest addition to the stadium sits on the north end of the stadium between the track and the field event area. A building, which serves as a storage area for track equipment, also serves as a concession stand and restroom area.

Oscar H. Frazier track received a new surface as the final step in the Tarleton Memorial Stadium Renovation project. A $26 million renovation to the stadium started in 2017 and is expected to be complete by the fall of 2018, which will move the home stands to the west side and expand the seating to over 9,000. The east side berm and stands will remain intact and will now house the visiting fans. The east-side concrete bleachers rest against a dirt berm and the center section features 750 seats with back rests forming a purple "T".
