Biography

Spruiells joins the Texans after a year with North Texas (2024) and a year at Northern Arizona. The defensive back redshirted with the Mean Green last season after a special freshman campaign in Flagstaff, Arizona. He played in all 11 games in NAU’s 2023 season, totaling 59 tackles, an interception, a forced fumble, a sack, 3.5 tackles for loss and two pass breakups. He started the last eight games of that season, starting his collegiate career with a forced fumble at Arizona and ending the year with an interception at Eastern Washington. Spruiells garnered double-digit tackles against Portland State (11) and UC Davis (10) and also had eight tackles and a sack at Sacramento State.

“David Spruiells was a starter as a true freshman at Northern Arizona, and an impactful player,” Whitten said. “He’s a dynamic guy, and I would not be surprised if he’s one of the better players that we signed around here.”

Spruiells, whose nickname is Davo, played his prep career at South Oak Cliff High School in Oak Cliff, Texas, his hometown. There he helped his team to two state championships at the District 2-5A level, as the team went 15-1 in 2021 and 13-3 in 2022. He was All-State and All-District, plus the District Defensive MVP as a senior, a year where he logged 69 total tackles, six interceptions and four passes defended. In 2021, his junior year, he had 76 tackles, two interceptions and two passes defended.
