STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton TexAnns wrapped up its seventh straight trip to the Lone Star Conference Tournament with a 91-52 win over visiting Texas A&M-Kingsville at Wisdom Gym on Saturday night. The 39-point win is the largest Lone Star Conference division win ever by a TexAnn team.
The TexAnns held the Javelinas to just four field goals in the first-half on their way to a commanding 49-15 at the break. Tarleton opened the game with a 6-0 run and then increased it to a 12-6 lead with 14:47 left to play in the period.
The Javelinas made it a 12-7 game on a free throw from Rochelle Ikeni before the TexAnns cruised to a 19-0 run over the next six minutes to push the lead to 31-17 with 8:30 left to play. Talrleton then closed out the remainder of the half with an 18-8 run to take the commanding 34-point lead into the locker room.
Shelby Adamson scored a team-high 13 points for the TexAnns before the break and Lisa Parker came off the bench to score seven points.
Tarleton shot 50 percent in the period and held TAMUK to just 16 percent from the field. The TexAnns scored 18 points off of 12 Javelina turnovers, while turning the ball over themselves just five times.
With mostly its bench players in for the remainder of the second-half, Tarleton still outscored the Javelinas 42-37 over the final 20 minutes to pick-up the 39-point win.
Tarleton shot 50 percent from the field for the second straight period including a 45.5 percent effort from beyond the three-point line.
TAMUK shot 50 percent from the field over the final 20 minutes as well and finished shooting 34 percent on the night.
Morgan Stehling led the TexAnns in scoring with 18 points with Adamson followed behind her at 16 points on the evening. Shedera Bowman put up 10 points for the TexAnns off the bench.
In what was likely her final game at Wisdom Gym, JoAnne Jones scored seven points, collected seven rebounds and had a block as well.
The TexAnns scored 34 points off turnovers and outscored the Javelinas 42-12 in the paint. Tarleton finished the game with 37 points off the bench compared with TAMUK's 24.
The TexAnns are now 21-5 overall on the season and 8-3 in the LSC South Division. TAMUK drops to 18-7 overall and 6-4 in the south division. A West Texas A&M win over TAMUK this Wednesday will assure the TexAnns the No. 2 seed in the south going into the postseason tournament.
This will be Tarleotn's eighth overall trip to the postseason tournament and seventh under head coach Ronnie Hearne. This season's tournament will be played in Bartlesville, Okla. for the third straight season.
The TexAnns will have Wednesday off and will return to the court next Saturday, Feb. 27 at Angelo State. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m. at Stephens Arena in San Angelo.
