Texans drop a pair to Greyhounds Friday

PORTALES, N.M. – The Tarleton Texans suffered a pair of losses to the hands of the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds in a Lone Star Conference doubleheader at Greyhound Field on Friday. Tarleton dropped the first game 3-2 in nine innings before being handed a 10-2 loss in the nightcap.

 

The losses drop the Texans to 5-9 overall and 2-8 in the LSC. The Greyhounds meanwhile improved to 7-5 overall, including a 7-3 mark in LSC play.

 

ENMU opened the first game with a run in the first inning on a sacrifice fly from Garrett Cook. Luis Quinones scored on the play to give the Greyhounds an early 1-0 lead.

 

Tarleton countered in the top of the second inning with a sacrifice fly as well to make it 1-1. Chris Casazza led off the inning advancing to first base after being hit by a pitch. He then moved over to third on Charlie Ulbricht's double and then later scored on Andrew Kapples fly out to center field.

 

ENMU's Kevin Thompson singled home Paden Vendrely in the bottom of the fourth inning to give the Greyhounds a 2-1 lead and Tarleton then tied the game in the top of the seventh inning when Landon McCall came home to score on an error by the left fielder.

 

With the game tied after seven innings, the two teams headed into extra frames. Then, with two outs in the top of the bottom ninth inning, Sean Cruce singled home Matt Nilo to give the Greyhounds the win in the first game.

 

Anthony Smith (1-1) picked up the win after working 4.0 innings of relief, allowing just one run on four hits.

 

Tarleton's Nathan Lewis (1-2) was saddled with his second straight, ninth inning loss. The junior worked the final 1.2 innings in relief, allowing the one run on just one hit. Ryan Salt (ND, 2) got the start for the Texans. He went 7.0 innings, allowing two runs on five hits. He walked five and struck out two.

 

Tarleton led off the second game with a single from McCall and he later scored on a sacrifice bunt from Mary Jeffery to take the early 1-0 lead. ENMU countered with a run in both the first and second innings to take a 2-1 advantage. The Greyhounds then added another run in the fourth to make it a 3-1 ballgame before a seven-run sixth inning pushed ENMU's lead to 10-1.

 

McCall then added a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh inning that scored Kapple on the play, but the Texans popped out for the third out of the inning and ENMU picked up the win.

 

Doug McIntyre (1-1) got the win for the Greyhounds, going six full innings and allowing just two runs on seven hits. He walked three and struck out one.

 

Kenneth Stockton (1-1) picked up the loss for the Texans. He went 5.1 innings, allowing eight runs (seven earned) on eight hits while walking six and striking out four. Chris Pearson came in to game in relief of Stockton to pick up the final two outs. He allowed two runs on three hits.

 

The Texans and Greyhounds will resume the series tomorrow with another doubleheader. First pitch of game one is set for 2 p.m. CST.
