TexAnns drop two Saturday

DURANT, Okl a. – The Tarleton TexAnns dropped two games Saturday at the 2010 Lone Star Conference Crossover tournament, losing to No. 7 Midwestern State (6-0) and Cameron (3-2).

Tarleton fell to 13-17 overall with the two losses.

The TexAnns will return to action at the tournament for two games on Sunday, March 28.

Tarleton will play Southwestern Oklahoma at 2 p.m. before facing Southeastern Oklahoma at 6 p.m. The game against SWOSU will be webcast here.

Midwestern State 6, Tarleton 0

The No. 7 Mustangs loaded the bases in the top of the first inning, but the TexAnns held the opposition off the scoreboard.  MSU then scored its first run in the top of second inning on a hit and an error to take the lead.

The Mustangs added three runs on two hits and an error in the top of the third. 

Katie Smith came in to pitch for the TexAnns and MSU scored two in the top of the fourth on three hits. Smith was called for four illegal pitches, one of which scored a runner.

Brandie Simmons pitched the final three innings and allowed just three hits to 12 batters faced. She struck out one and allowed no runs to end the game.

Tarleton had runners on the bags in all but the second inning, but the TexAnns stranded eight runners. 

Norris was the pitcher of record and fell to 9-9 on the season with the loss.

The TexAnns had just three hits as MSU pitcher Brittney Tanner fanned 14 Tarleton batters.

Cameron 3, Tarleton 2

Tarleton jumped on top early in the game two of the day, scoring one run in the bottom of the first inning. Rebecca Wessels walked to lead the inning before stealing second and then third. Tami Sutton then doubled to left to score the run and give Tarleton the advantage.

Katie Smith started the game and pitched just the first for Tarleton. Norris took over in the circle to start the second inning when Cameron had one run on one hit to tie the game. 

The Lady Aggies put runners on in the fourth, fifth and sixth. After allowing the run in the top of the first, CU's Carrie Harvey retired the next 10 batters before Arianna Rodriguez walked in the bottom of the fourth. The pitcher then retired eight of the next nine batters to head into the final inning with the score tied at one run apiece.

CU then had runners on second and third in the top of the seventh and two errors by the TexAnns put two runs on the board for the Lady Aggies to give them a 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the frame, Victoria Kelly singled and then advanced to second on an error by the shortstop. Brittany Terry then reached on an error by the second baseman and Kelly went to third. Elyse Tatum came in to run for Terry. Ashlyn Aston pinch hit and got a sacrifice fly to score Kelly and cut the lead to one, 3-2. Tatum stole second before a strikeout and a foul out to third ended the threat. 

Norris took the loss after pitching six innings and giving up three runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Harvey pitched all seven innings and allowed two runs, two hits, two walks and nine strikeouts.
