TexAnns fall at WTAMU to close series

CANYON – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team fell 10-4 in the final game of the Lone Star Conference South Division series at No. 18 West Texas A&M on Saturday.

The TexAnns fell to 18-20 on the season and 3-6 in the South Division with the loss as the Lady Buffaloes improved to 35-13 and 9-3.

WTAMU jumped out early in the bottom of the first with seven runs on four hits.

In the top of the third inning, the TexAnns jumped on the board. Ashlyn Aston walked to open the frame before Rebecca Wessels reached on a fielder's choice that got the runner out at second. Wessels stole second before Victoria Kelly reached on a fielding error to put runners at the corners With two outs, Brittany Terry singled to left center to score Wessels. April Gonzalez then got hit by a pitch to score Kelly and cut the lead to five.

The Lady Buffs added one run in the bottom of the third on three hits and an error to make it 8-2 before Tarleton scored again in the top of the fifth frame.

Julie Norris singled up the middle before Terry singled to left. Both runners advanced on an error, and Norris scored. Terry scored on a Gonzalez single to left. Tarleton trailed 8-4.

The home team added two runs on three hits in the bottom of the fifth to take the game, 10-4.

Norris started the game and pitched just 0.1 off an inning while giving up five runs on two hits and walking three. Katie Smith came in to pitch the next 5.2 innings and allowed five runs (four earned) on 12 hits with a walk and three strikeouts. 

Tarleton will return to action at St. Edward's in Austin at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, April 13.
