STEPHENVILLE - After opening the season with two "very talented" opponents in the St. Mary's Classic, the No. 20 Tarleton TexAnns (0-2) will make their home debut Wednesday in search of their first win.
"We played two very good teams last weekend," said Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne. "We've just got to keep working and getting better, but those were definitely two fine programs."
Tarleton struggles were documented all over the floor in the opening games.
As a team, Tarleton turned the ball over 41 times in two games and only forced 16 steals while also shooting just 30 percent (32-108) from the floor and 21 percent (7-33) from 3-point territory.
The TexAnns' inexperience in the paint was exposed in Sunday's loss to Fort Hays, when Katelyn Edwards posted a double-double with 20 points and 13 rebounds. As a team, Tarleton lost the rebounding battle 48-31 and 22-9 on offensive boards.
On the bright side, however, Tarleton's sister tandem - Shelby and Peyton Adamson - is averaging double figures over the first two games with 15.5 and 12.5, respectively.
The TexAnns will host St. Mary's Wednesday before returning to the road Saturday for a 2 p.m. bout against St. Edward's.
St. Mary's (0-2) suffered a similar fate as the TexAnns over the weekend, falling by 10 to Fort Hays Saturday and by five to Pittsburg State Sunday.
The Rattlers are led in scoring by Jackie Edwards, who posted 18 against Pittsburg State while Morgan Pullins (11.5 ppg) and Felicia Jacobs (10.5) are also averaging double figures.
Pullins scored 14 off the bench against FHSU in the opener and is also leading St. Mary's in rebounds with 13 in two games.
St. Edward's (1-1) split its opening weekend with an 88-79 win over Missouri-St. Louis and a 78-68 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville.
In the season opener, St. Ed's was led by Maddie Wheeler, who drained 27 points to pace the victory while Brittany Ward and Shaniqua Adams each posted a 10 spot in the loss to TAMUK.
Wednesday's game will tip-off at 6 p.m. in Wisdom Gym and will be broadcasted on KSTV 93.1 FM, while the 2 p.m. Saturday showdown can also be heard on KSTV and live stats can be viewed at StEdwards.edu.
