STEPHENVILLE - The No. 8 Tarleton men's basketball team will compete in their second home event of the season when they welcome No. 11 Central Oklahoma and Washburn on Friday and Saturday respectively at 7 p.m. Friday's game will be the highest ranked head-to-head competition of the weekend.
The Texans continue their 19-game home winning streak and are a perfect 2-0 thus far in 2011-12. Last weekend as part of the South Central Regional Challenge, Tarleton defeated Southeastern Oklahoma (61-50) on Friday and Pittsburg State (57-40) on Saturday.
This Friday, the Texans will host No. 11 Central Oklahoma (2-1), a team that Tarleton has a familiar history with. Last season, the Bronchos defeated the Texans in the championship game of the LSC Tournament, 68-52. Tarleton will look to get revenge against a dangerous UCO team.
With two wins under their belt, the Bronchos are coming off their first loss of the season. UCO fell to in-state rival Southwestern Oklahoma 76-70 Tuesday in Edmond, Okla. On the year, the Bronchos are averaging 76.3 points per game and holding opponents to 67.0 points per game. UCO returns three starters and seven letterwinners from
Brent Friday is leading the offense with 12 points per game, while Shane Carroll, Tyler Phillips and Johnny Stephene are all averaging double digit points. Friday also has 7.7 rebounds per game to add to his arsenal. As a team, UCO is shooting 47.0 percent from the field, 37.1 percent from three-point range and 68.8 percent from the charity stripe.
In Tarleton's second contest of the weekend, the Texans will take on the Ichabods of Washburn, who are no slouches themselves. WU is 1-1 this season and coming off an 18-10 2010-11 campaign. The Ichabods have a win over Arkansas-Fort Smith, but lost to Arkansas-Monticello. They are sure to be a tough match-up for Tarleton on Saturday.
Washburn is averaging 79.5 points per game and shooting 45.5 percent from the floor, 20.0 percent form three-point land and 79.2 percent from the free throw line. They are also giving up 73 points to opponents, but Saturday's contest will surely be a defensive battle.
Will McNeil is leading the team with 26.5 points and 7.5 rebounds per game through two contests. Kyle Wiggins and Martin Mitchell are both adding 11.5 points per game as a supporting cast for McNeil. The Ichabods have committed fewer fouls, fewer turnovers and out-rebounded their opponents this season as well.
