STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton men's basketball team will try to get back on the right track when they host Paul Quinn Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 8 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
Both teams are coming off losses, including the Texans contest against Washburn Saturday that ended Tarleton's 20-game home winning streak. Paul Quinn fell to Angelo State 81-60 in their only game so far this season.
Tarleton is 3-1 on the season and hopes to rebound from a bittersweet Texan Tip-Off Classic. The No. 8 Texans defeated No. 11 Central Oklahoma on Friday, 87-65, but fell to unranked Washburn on Saturday, 61-57. Tarleton also has victories over Pittsburg State and Southeastern Oklahoma this season as well.
On the year, the Texans are averaging 65.5 points per game and holding opponents to 54 points per game. Tarleton is shooting 45 percent from the field, 28.8 percent from three-point land and 69.4 percent from the free throw line. Opposing teams are shooting just 35.4 percent against the Texans.
Fabian Wilson is leading the Tarleton attack with 12.0 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He is also the reigning Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Week with seven blocks and three steals on the year.
Chris Harrell made the All-Tournament team this past weekend after a 28-point performance against the No. 11 Bronchos. He is averaging 11.8 points per game this season and shooting 50 percent from the floor.
Zach Nelson was named tournament MVP for the Texan Tip-Off Classic and is a dual-threat for the Texans. The senior forward is averaging 9.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game, and shoots 81.3 percent from the field.
Shedrick Haynes has been a major factor in Tarleton's success with 10 steals and 15 assists from the point guard position. The Florida native is also adding 6.8 points per contest.
This season, the Texans are +1.5 in turnover margin, but are lacking in the rebounding department with a -3.5 differential.
Paul Quinn is a little-known team from the Red River Athletic Conference, who is 1-2 on the season, including a 21-point loss to Angelo State on Saturday. They also fell to Midwestern State earlier in the year.
Against ASU, Paul Quinn was led by Nafis Richardson's 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting. He also recorded four steals, five rebounds and two assists. Aaron McCuin added 17 points and nine boards, while Lamar Nichols dished out four assists. The Tigers are under the direction of head coach Charles Keeley, who is looking to guide his team into Stephenville Tuesday night for an upset over the No. 8 Texans.
