Adamson named LSC Offensive POW, scores 21 as TexAnns roll

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE – Just five hours after being named the Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week by the Lone Star Conference, Shelby Adamson scored a season-high 21 points to help end the TexAnns three-game losing streak and start LSC play with a win.

Tarleton (3-5, 1-0) defeated Cameron (2-2, 0-1) 71-59 in front of 1,878 at Wisdom Gym Wednesday night.

The teams battled for control early with Cameron holding a slight 9-8 advantage over the first 5:26.

Lisa Parker hit a layup to start a 10-0 run for the TexAnns who built an 18-9 lead with 12 minutes left.

Cameron cut the lead to four on three different occasions, but Tarleton's Morgan Stehling drained three buckets to go along with 3-pointers by Parker and Peyton Adamson and a layup by Cheyenne Berry to extend the TexAnn lead back to double figures at 34-15.

The Aggies could get no closer than a 12-point deficit over the rest of the half, and the TexAnns ended the first period with five straight from Stehling and a 3-ball by Tara Towns.

With 14:29 left in the game, Tarleton led by 18 but the full court pressure by Cameron and five straight missed shots by Tarleton allowed Cameron to get to nine points before Adamson got a layup to fall at the 10:20 mark.

The Aggies got to within six with 4:55 left but a 6-1 Tarleton push extended the lead too much for the Aggies to overcome.

Adamson's game-leading 21 points came on 4-8 shooting from the floor and 13-14 from the line. Morgan Stehling and Cheyenne Berry each added 10.

Shanae Lowrance managed to grab 10 rebounds while battling for position with 6-0 Aggie posts, Sabelle Diata and Julie Paunovic, who each recorded double-doubles.

As a team, Tarleton forced a season-high 30 opponent turnovers which led to 33 TexAnn points and despite Cameron's post presence, the TexAnns won the battle of paint points 30-24.

The win snapped Tarleton's first three-game losing streak since 2008 and got head coach Ronnie Hearne one win closer to 1000 for his career. He is now at 995.

Prior to the game, the LSC released its weekly awards which highlighted Adamson's efforts at the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction, Colo. last week. The senior led the TexAnns in scoring in both games (12, 15) and moved into eighth place on Tarleton's all-time scoring list.

After Wednesday's effort, the senior is five points shy of tying Katie Crawford for seventh all-time.

Tarleton returns to action Dec. 7 in Kingsville against the Javelinas. A live broadcast can be heard on KSTV 93.1 FM or at TarletonSports.com.
