Adamson's 27 leads TexAnns to 83-64 win over Incarnate Word

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE – “Peyton Adamson, 3-pointer!”

That was the most common saying through the speakers of Wisdom Gym Saturday night as the sophomore transfer drained a career-high 27 points – 21 from 3-point land – to lift the TexAnns (5-5, 3-0) over Incarnate Word (6-2, 2-2) 83-64.

The Cardinals entered the game leading the Lone Star Conference in 3-point shooting defense this season, allowing just 19-percent from beyond the arc.

Adamson was 70 percent after finishing 7-10 from deep and 9-13 from the floor.

The sophomore got the scoring started with her first three just seven seconds into the game which started an 8-2 run for the TexAnns.

Over the next seven minutes, the Cardinals clawed back to build a six-point lead at 18-12.

Tarleton clawed back to trail by just one with 6:21 left after Cheyenne Berry stole in the inbound pass for a quick lay-in. Shelby Adamson gave Tarleton the lead back after a turnover by UIW on the ensuing possession.

UIW struck back with a 6-2 push to lead by three before a 3-ball by Peyton from Shelby knotted the score at 31-31.

After the Cardinals drained a pair of free throws, the TexAnns ended the first half on a 9-2 run to lead 40-35 at the break.

Tarleton opened the second half on a 14-0 run to lead by 19 with 14:28 left in the game.

The TexAnns never led by less than 13 the rest of the way.

Peyton's 27 led all scorers while UIW's Katy Cooke poured in 21 points in the losing effort.

Tarleton's Shelby Adamson (12), Shanae Lowrance (11) and Lisa Parker (10) also added double figure points.

In addition to leading the conference in 3-point defense, UIW also entered as the leaders in shooting – both from the floor and 3-point land – and field goal defense, but struggled to defend Tarleton who posted a season high 53 percent from the floor and 50 percent from deep.

This marks Tarleton's fifth win against the Cardinals in their last seven meetings and brings Tarleton's record to .500 for the first time since Nov. 19.

Tarleton will take a week off for final exams and return to action Monday, Dec. 19 against the defending Lone Star Conference Tournament Champion Texas Woman's at 6 p.m.
