STEP RIGHT UP
The TexAnns will travel to Wichita Falls Monday night to make up a game from earlier in the season that was postponed due to winter weather. Tarleton is coming off a 24-point win over A&M-Kingsville in which they clinched the LSC South Division title. Emotions will be running high as the Mustangs fight to stay alive in postseason play. Midwestern State is just 9-14 on the year and 5-6 in conference play, but they have won four of their last five games.
INTO THE RANKINGS
Tarleton was ranked No. 19 in the most recent USA Today/ESPN NCAA Division II poll, in accordance with the American Basketball Coaches Association. This marks the highest ranking for TexAnn program since moving to Division II. The TexAnns were ranked No. 21 last week and have been in the Top 25 for the past six weeks.
The TexAnns were also ranked No. 2 in the most recent South Central regional poll released Wednesday. They trail only Northeastern State in the region. This also marks the highest ever regional ranking in the program's history.
MAKING HISTORY
The TexAnns clinched the Lone Star Conference South title with their win over the Javelinas. This marks the first title in the program's history. Tarleton has yet to lose a South Division game this season.
With the win, the TexAnns also clinched a spot in the LSC tournament. It marks the eighth straight season that Tarleton will be postseason-bound.
LEADING THE TEXANNS
Shelby Adamson continues to be the TexAnns' leading scorer with 16.4 points per game, to go along with 4.0 rebounds, 2.4 steals, and 3.9 assists per game.
Morgan Stehling is adding 10.1 points per game, followed by
Brittnie Haley with 9.0 and
Kelsey Benford with 7.8 points each contest.
Kiara Wright leads Tarleton with 7.4 rebounds per game, while Benford chips in 6.2 boards per game.
Sonya Sundberg also adds 3.7 assists each contest.
TEXANN SHOOTING
Tarleton is averaging .436 from the floor, .328 from the three-point arc and .681 from the charity stripe. In conference play, the TexAnns are shooting .460 from the floor, .342 from deep, and .678 from the line.
SHOOTING DEFENSE
The TexAnns are holding opponents to .380 from the field, .320 from behind the arc and .634 from the line.
OUTING THE OPPONENTS
Tarleton is outscoring foes 74.2 to 59.0 and outrebounding them 37.3 to 34.9 this season.
NOW ON SPECIAL
The TexAnns are 11-0 in the LSC South Division this year. With that, this year's team has tied the record for most conference wins in school history, set in 2005-06 when Hearne's team went 11-3.
IN THE CONFERENCE
The TexAnns are No. 2 in the Lone Star Conference in scoring defense (58.8) behind Northeastern State (54.4). The TexAnns are No. 1 in the LSC in scoring margin (+14.8) and are No. 3 in the league in scoring offense (73.5) behind Central Oklahoma (75.8).
Tarleton is No. 1 in turnover margin (+5.59) after being No. 1 with 9.7 steals per game. The TexAnns are No. 3 in assist/turnover ratio (0.9).
The TexAnns are also No. 1 in offensive rebound percentage (.376), and No. 5 in blocks (3.3).
INDIVIDUALS IN THE LSC
Shelby Adamson is No. 7 in the Lone Star Conference in scoring (16.3) while
Kiara Wright is tied at No. 9 in rebounding (7.3) and
Kelsey Benford is No. 17 (6.2).
Adamson is tied at No. 1 in steals per game (2.3) and No. 6 in assists (3.9), while
Sonya Sundberg is No. 1 in assist/turnover ratio (2.0) and No. 8 in assists (3.6). Benford is also No. 4 in blocks per game (1.5).
SCOUTING THE MUSTANGS
Midwestern State is 9-14 on the season and 5-6 in conference play. The Mustangs are winners of four of their last five however and 8-3 at home this season. MSU's only conference loss at home this year was an 80-77 loss to Abilene Christian.
Overall, the Mustangs are shooting 40.3 percent from the floor, 27.2 percent from behind the arc, and 70.0 percent at the charity stripe. They average 68.5 points each game while allowing opponents to score 68.7 points per contest.
Nolisha Markham leads MSU with 14.2 points per game to go along with 6.9 rebounds per game. Savannah Carver is adding 11.1 points per game while Cierra Thompson chips in 10.6 points. Jazman Patterson also grabs 6.4 boards each game.
ALL-TIME SERIES
MSU leads the all-time series 28 games to 21 for Tarleton, but its the TexAnns that won the most recent meeting, taking an 88-57 decision on Feb. 5 this season.
Tarleton has also won the last 11 meetings, dating back to 2005.
