Texan baseball sweeps Kingsville with a pair of wins on Saturday

- Box Score - Game 1
- Box Score - Game 2

KINGSVILLE – The Tarleton baseball team took a series sweep over A&M-Kingsville after crushing the Javelinas in both games on Saturday.

The Texans improve to 10-2 on the season and 6-2 in conference play with their 6-0 win in the first game and a 10-0 win in the second game.

In the three-game set, Tarleton out-scored the Javelinas, who received preseason first-place votes, 22-3 with all three TAMUK runs coming in game one.

GAME ONE – Tarleton 6, TAMUK 0

The Texans and the Javelinas both got off to a slow start in game one of the double header on Saturday with neither team able to get a runner to second through the first two innings.

With Tarleton's offense getting a feel for the game, they were bound to put something together at some point and it happened in a huge way.

In the top of the third, catcher Andrew Kapple got things going by drawing a one-out walk. He advanced to second on a failed pick-off attempt, before scoring on a Tim Rainey RBI single.

That opened the flood gates for Tarleton as they proceeded to hammer the Kingsville pitching.

After Rainey drove in Kapple, he stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He was then driven in himself when second baseman Landon McCall doubled to rightfield for a 2-0 Texan lead.

Designated hitter Mark Jeffery did a McCall impression and stroked an RBI double of his own the next at-bat to make it 3-0.

Leftfielder Ethan Stuckly followed with a walk to put runners on first and second. That is when All-American candidate Chris Casazza yanked a pitch to deep left field that cleared the fence for a three-run home run. It was Casazza's third long ball of the year and gave Tarleton a 6-0 advantage.

The Texans weren't done yet though as third baseman Junnior Dishmey singled to left, pushing Javelina starter Clay Stephens from the mound.

Shortstop Travis Hayes reached on a fielder's choice, but Tarleton would be unable to capitalize any further in the inning as they batted all the way through the lineup.

That six-run effort would be all the Texans would need to down the Javelinas 6-0 in game one.

Miguel Ramirez (3-0) remains undefeated on the year and won his third straight start after tossing a seven- inning, complete game shut-out. The senior gave up eight hits and only one walk, while fanning nine Javelinas.

Clay Stephens (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season after giving up six runs on five hits and two walks in 2 1/3 innings.

Casazza led the way offensively with his three-run shot, while Rainey, McCall and Jeffery all drove in RBI's for the Texans.

Tarleton was out-hit six to eight, but managed to strand all eight base runners for TAMUK.

GAME TWO – Tarleton 10, TAMUK 0

The Texans carried over their momentum in to the second game and took an early lead yet again.

Second baseman Landon McCall drew a lead-off walk before scoring on a TAMUK error caused by a Junnior Dishmey ground ball. Dishmey took advantage of Kingsville's mistake as he stole third. The Javelina's attempt to throw him out sailed past the third baseman, allowing Dishmey to score Tarleton's second run. The Texans managed two runs in the first inning without even recording a hit.

Both teams settled in after that and the scoring subsided until the fourth inning when Tarleton struck again. Shortstop Travis Hayes stepped up to the plate and gave the Texans a 3-0 lead with mammoth shot to left-center, collecting his first home run of the season.

The entire time that Tarleton was putting up runs on Kingsville, the Texans were getting outstanding pitching from Brandon Van Riper and Brandyn Greer, both of whom tossed three shut-out innings.

Tarleton added to their lead again in the top of the sixth when pinch runner Ethan Stuckly scored on a throwing error by the Javelinas. That was followed by a clutch hit courtesy of Hayes, who drove in Casazza with an RBI single to right.

By the top of the seventh inning, the Texans were enjoying a 5-0 lead with little resistance from TAMUK.

That is when Tarleton decided to seal the fate of the Javelinas as they doubled their lead and ten-run ruled TAMUK.

The scoring in the seventh began when Stuckly laced a two-run double down the leftfield line, scoring McCall and Rainey. After a walk by Jeffery, Casazza bombed his second three-run shot of the day to cap off Tarleton's offensive assault.

The Texans finished the game in just seven innings, taking a 10-0 decision.

Greer (2-0) was awarded the win for Tarleton, after tossing three shut-out innings. Ryan Salt pitched a no-hit shut-out ninth, but it was a not a save situation.

Casazza's three RBI's led the way yet again, while Hayes and Stuckly added two RBI's. The Texans recorded 10 runs on just six hits, but benefited from four Kingsville errors.

The Texans improved their record to 10-2 on the season and 7-2 in the LSC.

Tarleton returns to action Tuesday when they travel to St. Edward's for a single game.
