TexAnn rally falls just short of sweep

KINGSVILLE – The Tarleton TexAnns dropped a 7-5 softball game Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville in Kingsville, but Tarleton still claimed the Lone Star Conference South Division series – two games to one.

The TexAnns (14-9-1) are 4-2 in the LSC South Division while the Javelinas (18-13) end the weekend 1-5 in division play.

Tarleton struck first in the top of the opening frame when Samantha Swanda doubled to left field with two outs before Katie Welbron singled through the right side to score the TexAnn pitcher.

The Javelinas took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second inning when they scored four runs on four hits before adding two more runs in the bottom of the third frame on two hits and an error. TAMUK led 6-1.

Welborn led the top of the fourth inning with a single through the left side and advanced to second on a field error. Eryn Frietas pinch ran for the first baseman before Kelsey Latta singled to left field to put runners on the corners. With one out, Amy Gabbert singled through the right side to cut the lead to 6-2.

TAMUK scored its last run in the bottom of the fourth inning with one run on three this to make it 7-2 in favor of the home team.

In the top of the seventh, the TexAnn offense got going again. With one out, Brittany Dumas singled down the right field line before Marcie Rodriguez pinch ran for the catcher. Misti Lindamood singled to short as she pinch hit for Victoria Kelly. With two outs, Arianna Rodriguez homered to left field to score all three runs and cut the lead to two. Swanda then fouled out to the catcher at the fence to end the game.

Swanda pitched 5.1 innings and recorded two walks with six strikeouts. Randi Fentress pitched 0.2 innings and retired both batters she faced. 

The TexAnns will return to action on Tuesday, March 22 in Denton when they play Henderson State in a doubleheader at 5 p.m.
