TexAnns set for key series vs. No. 1 ASU

STEPHENVILLE – The Tarleton TexAnn softball team will host a key three-game Lone Star Conference South Division series this weekend against No. 1 Angelo State in Stephenville. The teams will play one game on Friday, March 25 at 3 p.m. before a doubleheader is set for noon on Saturday, March 26.

Tarleton Athletics invites all TexAnn fans to a hotdog cookout prior to Saturday's games at 11:30 a.m.

The TexAnns are coming off a split with Henderson State on Tuesday that pushed their record to 15-10-1 overall this season. Tarleton is in third place in the South Division with a 4-2 conference record after taking two of three games from both Texas Woman's and Texas A&M-Kingsville.

Rebecca Wessels leads the TexAnns with a .413 batting average, 33 hits, 25 runs scored, two triples and 15-of-18 on stolen bases. Samantha Swanda (.302) is tops on the squad with 25 runs batted in, six home runs and a .570 slugging percentage. The TexAnns are batting .284 as a team while opponents have a combined earned run average of 3.47.

Swanda leads the TexAnns in the circle with a 2.09 ERA and an 8-6 record. She has pitched in 97.1 innings and has walked 30 while striking out 101. Opponents are hitting .218 off the junior. Katie Smith (5-2) is second with a 2.26 ERA in 49.2 innings of action. She has recorded 15 walks and 28 strikeouts. The team has a combined ERA of 2.24 and opponents are hitting .246 off the TexAnns.

ASU is the top-ranked team in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association poll and is 25-2 overall. The Rambelles are tied with Abilene Christian atop the LSC South standings with a 5-1 record.

Kaycee Taylor leads the team with a .388 batting average while Chelsey Walters (.362) leads the squad with 34 hits and 28 runs scored. DeeShanaLynn Tafiti (.367) is tops on the team with five home runs and 24 RBI. The Rambelles are hitting .321 as a team and opponents have a combined ERA of 5.82. ASU is averaging 6.25 runs per contest this season.

Clarissa Molina is undefeated at 11-0 this season with a 1.42 ERA. She has pitched in 49.1 innings and has nine walks and 56 strikeouts as opponents are hitting .223 off the pitcher. Mary Kate McKay is second on the team with a 1.62 ERA and a 10-1 record in 82.1 innings of action. She has recorded 19 walks and 40 strikeouts. The team ERA is 1.80 while opponents are averaging .240 at the plate.
