Texans host UTPB for weekend series

STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton baseball team will welcome UT-Permian Basin this weekend for a three-game set starting Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex.

The Texans enter the series 21-7 and ranked No. 27 nationally by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper.  They are currently riding a four-game winning streak and hold a 9-4 record at home.

As a team, Tarleton is hitting a .303 average, while posting a .465 slugging percentage and a .403 on-base percentage.  Mark Jeffery leads the team with a .431 average and a .573 on-base percentage, the second highest mark in all of Division II.  Ethan Stuckly has recorded a Tarleton-high 27 RBI's on the year, while Jeffery and Chris Casazza have both added 24 RBI's.  Casazza also has 10 home runs and 27 runs scored this season.

The Texans combine for a .965 fielding percentage, the best in the Lone Star Conference.

Tarleton's pitching staff has a 4.97 ERA overall, compared to opponents' 6.09 mark.  Nathan Lewis leads the squad with a 4-1 mark to go along with a 4.89 ERA and 31 strikeouts.  Closer Ryan Turner also has four wins under his belt and also leads Tarleton with six saves, 14 appearances and 34 k's.

UT-Permian Basin is 14-15 overall this season and 7-10 away from home.  The Falcons post a .295 batting average and a 6.10 ERA.  Jeremy Miller has been the best hitter on the team so far this season with a .364 average, 29 RBI's and 13 extra-base hits.  Andy Quiring is hitting .360 at the plate, while Travis Wilcox has added 11 doubles and 21 RBI's.  Felix Cardenas is the ace on the Falcons' staff, with a 3.09 ERA, three wins, a complete game and 59 strikeouts.  Jeff Fisher-Gasper has been the go-to guy in the bullpen, earning three saves in relief.

First pitch for the doubleheader is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Saturday, while first pitch for the single game Sunday is also at 1 p.m.

Saturday will also have a cookout hosted by Tarleton athletics starting at 12:30 p.m. at the field.  Be sure to come out and show your support for the Texans and get your free hot dogs, cookies, chips and drinks.
