Game 1 – Tarleton 8, WTAMU 5
In the first game of the afternoon, the Buffaloes took an early 2-0 lead after two innings. That is when the Texans woke up and exploded for six runs in the third inning alone.
Junnior Dishmey got things started with an RBI double down the leftfield line. Tarleton added two more runs on a fielder's choice that resulted in an error and a 3-2 Texan lead.
Travis Hayes and Chris Casazza continued the third-inning assault with back-to-back RBI singles, followed by Tim Rainey's fielder's choice RBI, making it a 6-3 ballgame.
The Texans built on their already substantial lead in the fifth when Andrew Kapple stroked a two-run single to right field, scoring Rainey and Hayes.
West Texas managed a single run in the bottom of the fifth and two runs in the sixth, but it would not be enough of a comeback to take down the visiting Texans.
Nathan Lewis (8-1) picked up his eighth win of the season against a dangerous West Texas offense, giving up five runs, four earned, on nine hits in five innings.
Closer Ryan Turner blanked the Buffaloes in the seventh for his 11th save of the season.
Irving Camacho (6-4) was saddled with the loss for West Texas after allowing six runs, four earned, on nine hits in three innings.
Hayes and Kapple both had three-hit games to lead the Tarleton offense while Kapple drove in a pair as well. The Texans out-hit the Buffaloes 13-9, with seven Tarleton batters contributing at least one hit.
Game 2 – Tarleton 8, WTAMU 5
The second game started off similar to game one as Rainey put Tarleton ahead early with an RBI single in the second inning.
Pitching for both teams settled in though, as the score remained 1-0 through the first five and a half innings.
The Buffaloes awoke in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, taking a 3-1 advantage.
With their backs against the wall, the Texans came out swinging in the seventh with a two-run single to left by Ethan Stuckly.
Tarleton followed that up with two more runs in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk by Jared Musgrove and a wild pitch that allowed Hayes to score, taking the lead away from West Texas.
The Texans used a three-run ninth to seal up the victory. Mark Jeffery reached on a throwing error that plated Stuckly to start things off. Zane Hensley capped the scoring off with a two-run single to center that gave Tarleton their second 8-5 victory of the day.
With their 35th win of the season, the Texans end the 2011 year on a positive note and a series victory over West Texas.
Reliever Jake Sowell (5-0) was awarded the win for his efforts in the seventh and eighth innings. Closer Ryan Turner earned his 12th save of the year and second of the day after tossing the last 1 1/3 innings for Tarleton.
Casey Lish (3-5) suffered the loss for the Buffaloes with the two go-ahead runs allowed to the Texans on his watch.
Hensley's two RBI's led the offense while Stuckly drove in two of his own. Hensley and Hayes both had three-hit games for Tarleton as well. Again, the Texans out-hit West Texas 12-11.
Head coach Bryan Conger discussed Tarleton's performance on Saturday.
"The kids did a great job of bouncing back today," said Conger. "They played well in all three phases of the game and were really good at going one pitch at a time. We will rest up and get ready for the conference tournament."
Tarleton (35-11, 23-9) will head back to Stephenville and prepare for the Lone Star Conference tournament starting May 7.
