ABILENE - The Tarleton baseball team scored eight runs in a single inning, completing a late-game rally to defeat Hardin Simmons 12-6 in Abilene.
The Texans got on the board first with a pair of runs in the opening inning. Junnior Dishmey plated the first run with a sacrifice fly, before
Mark Jeffery added the second run with an RBI groundout.
The Cowboys got a run back in the bottom of the first, but Tarleton struck once again in the second with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by
Tim Rainey.
With a 3-1 lead heading into the third, the Texans felt in control, but Hardin Simmons answered with two runs of their own to tie the game up at 3-3.
The Cowboys continued to build on their momentum by taking a lead in the fifth inning, forcing the Texans into a 4-3 hole heading into the later stages of the game.
Hardin Simmons' lead must have stirred something in the Tarleton dugout because the Texans exploded for eight runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Chris Casazza got the rally started with a bases-loaded, three-RBI triple to deep left-center, putting Tarleton ahead once again, 6-4.
The Texans did not stop there though and collected a few more insurance runs courtesy of a bases-loaded walk, RBI singles by
Ethan Stuckly, Jeffery, and
Zane Hensley, and a Cowboy error. In just that inning alone, Tarleton got eight runs on six hits and two HSU errors.
The Cowboys managed a pair of futile runs in the seventh and ninth, while the Texans added their 12th run on
Garrett Hardey's RBI single in the ninth.
With the 12-6 win, Tarleton improves their record to 25-7 on the year and pushes their win streak to eight-straight games.
Jake Sowell (4-0) is on a winning-streak of his own, picking up the victory on the mound in the past three games for Tarleton. He was awarded the win after tossing two strong innings in relief.
Skylar Sillivent (0-1) suffered the loss for the Cowboys and gave up six runs, two earned, in just 2/3 of an inning of work.
The Texans recorded 14 hits on the night, led by Stuckly and Hayes' three-hit performances. Casazza drove in three runs for Tarleton, while Jeffery added two RBI's. Eight different Texans provided an RBI in the game with nine players recording a hit in the game. They also had 12 different players reach base in the game, thanks to HSU's nine walks.
Tarleton returns home this weekend for a three-game series with Northeastern State.
