Texans rally to push win streak to 12

ABILENE – Tarleton put its 11-game winning streak on the line Saturday at Moody Coliseum in Abilene, and came within six minutes of having it snapped.

However, the Texans overcame a double-digit deficit to rally for a 62-53 win against Abilene Christian Saturday to remain tied for the conference lead.

After starting the game in a 10-10 deadlock, a Wes Dipprey jumper started a 9-0 Tarleton run to give the Texans a 19-10 lead with 9:47 left.

That's when ACU struck for a big first half blow.

The Wildcats then went the rest of the first half on a 20-5 run, including 11 unanswered over the final 4:43, to lead 30-24 at the break.

Abilene Christian held, at least, a three-point lead over the first 11 minutes of the second half and led 42-39 with nine minutes to go.

Shedrick Haynes tied the game with a 3-ball at the 8:03 mark, and after a pair of ACU free throws, he gave Tarleton a one-point lead with 7:04 left.

With just 3:47 left, ACU scored five unanswered before the Wildcats committed their first technical foul of the afternoon to put Tarleton's leading scorer Chris Harrell at the free throw line.

Harrell hit one free throw to bring the Texans within three at 46-49.

A jumper by Haynes and a layup from Fabian Wilson put Tarleton in the lead with 1:32 left.

After a pair of ACU free throws, a Brian Word jumper gave the Texans the last lead change they would need at 52-51 with 1:16 to play.

Leading by just one with 27 seconds left, ACU committed two technical fouls in the next five seconds to send Tarleton to the line a total of eight times where they hit seven free throws to seal the victory. The second technical led to the ejection of the Abilene Christian head coach.

Haynes led all scorers with 19 points while Harrell and Wilson also cracked double figures with 13 points each.

Abilene Christian won the battle in the paint 17-14 but was outrebounded by the Texans 33-29.

Tarleton returns to action Wednesday on the road against Texas A&M-Commerce at 8 p.m.
