Game Notes
STEPHENVILLE - Tarleton head coach Ronnie Hearne has a chance to notch his 1000th career victory as his TexAnns (7-5, 4-0) put some winning streaks on the line when they travel to Portales, N.M. Wednesday in the return of Lone Star Conference play against the Zias at 6:30 p.m. CST.
The biggest personal storyline of Wednesday's game, however, will be the search for win No. 1000 of Hearne's career at all levels.
Hearne entered this season with 992 total victories as a high school, junior college and NCAA head coach and has a chance to get No. 1000 Wednesday night.
The TexAnns have won five straight games, four straight LSC games, and eight straight against Eastern New Mexico. Tarleton hasn't lost to the Zias since 2000.
Eastern, however, enters Wednesday's contest coming off its biggest win of the season - a 122-100 barnburner against Oklahoma Panhandle.
In that contest, the Lone Star Conference scoring leader, Precious Herrin, poured in 35 points. This marked the third time this season the senior has amassed over 30 points, including a season-high 40 against Texas A&M-Kingsville in December.
Outside of Monday's game and a Nov. 15 win over Panhandle, the Zias' season has been anything but spectacular for first-year head coach Lindsey Wilson.
The Zias find themselves in the midst of a 3-8 season with their only other victory coming over Kingsville.
Herrin is leading the team and the LSC with 19.9 points per game and has twice as many points as the next highest scorer, which is Kiara Tate with 8.7 per contest.
As for the TexAnns, Kiara Wright has made her impact well known in her first two games of the season, posting a double-double in each of her first two games. Shelby Adamson has also benefitted from Wright's return, as the seniors points per game total has risen an average of four points in that span.
Tarleton enters the game as the LSC leaders in free throw percentage and the last time these two teams met, the TexAnns set a single game school record for free throws made and attempted.
Tip-off for the TexAnns' game with Eastern New Mexico is set for 6:30 p.m. CST Wednesday and a live broadcast can be heard on KSTV 93.1 FM or on TarletonSports.com.
