Furst, Texans use second half surge to oust the Patriots 77-61

STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton's Coleman Furst (G, Jr, Denison) scored a career-high 23 points to guide the Texans to a 77-61 win over Arlington Baptist at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville on Saturday.
 
The Texans moved to 4-1 on the season with the 16-point victory and head into Wednesday's Lone Star Conference-opener with a four-game winning streak. The Patriots fell to 2-5 with the loss and are now 0-2 all-time against the Texans.
 
The Texans led by just as many as five points in the first half before taking a 32-30 lead into the locker room at the break. Coleman Furst (G, Jr, Denison) came within tying his career high in just the first half of play, leading all players with 14 points at half. A'Darius Pegues (F, Jr, Louisville, Ky.) was a spark off the bench for the Texans, scoring six points and pulling down a rebound in eight minutes of playing time.
 
Tarleton shot 44.4 percent from the field, but were just 2-of-7 from beyond the three-point line. Furst made both three-pointers for the Texans, going a perfect 2-for-2 from beyond the arc in the first 20 minutes of play.
 
The Texans struggled at the free throw line in the first half, however, going just 6-for-12 from the charity stripe.
 
The Patriots led by as many as five points with 3:08 left in the first half up 28-23, but Tarleton managed to tie the game at 28-28 after going on a 5-0 run. Arlington Baptist shot 40.0 percent from the field, which included shooting 38.9 percent (7-18) from downtown.
 
The Patriots went to the charity stripe just four times in the first half, but the players converted three of the four attempts.
 
Tarleton fell behind 35-34 at the 18:44 mark in the second half but then went on an 8-0 run, but Arlington Baptist would come back and retake a one-point lead up 48-47 with 12:27 left to play in the game.
 
Tarleton trailed 50-49 midway through the contest, but an 11-0 run pushed Tarleton over the threshold and the Texans never looked back.
 
The Texans would lead by as many as 22 points late in the half and closed out the game up by 16 points and just dribbling-out the clock.
 
Furst's 23 points were a game-high, while De'Andre Upchurch (G, Jr, Flint, Mich.) followed with 13 points off the bench.
 
Davene Carter (F, So, Duncanville) came into the game having made 16-consecutive field goals and pushed that streak to 20 until missing a put-back lay-up on a rebound. Carter did however finish with 11 points and recorded the team's first double-double of the season with a game-high 13 rebounds. Brian Word (G, Sr, Baltimore, Md.) followed with eight boards on the night.
 
The Texans shot 51.5 percent from the field in the second half and finished the game shooting 48.3 percent from the floor on the night. Tarleton went 4-for-9 from beyond the arc in the second half as well and shot 37.5 percent from downtown in the game.
 
Tarleton out-rebounded the Patriots 41-25 and had 19 second-chance points in the game. The Texans forced 18 turnovers and turned them into 16 points on the night as well.
 
The Texans will break-away from non-conference action and begin its quest for a back-to-back conference championship as the team opens up Lone Star Conference play this Wednesday, Dec. 5, against Angelo State. Tip-off between the Texans and Rams is set for 7:30 p.m. inside the Junell Center in San Angelo.
