TexAnns hold off Midwestern State to complete regular season sweep, extend lead in LSC

- Box Score

WICHITA FALLS – Tarleton State (18-6, 15-1) holds off a second-half rally by Midwestern State (18-5, 14-3) to complete the regular season sweep over the Mustangs and extend its lead in the Lone Star Conference standings.

Midwestern rallied from a double-digit deficit to lead by three late in the game, but the TexAnns overcame the rally and foul trouble to claim the victory at D.L. Ligon Coliseum Monday.

This was the 14th straight win for Tarleton against Midwestern, dating back to 2005.

With 4:43 left in the game, Tarleton found itself trailing Midwestern 53-54 after a barrage of 3-pointers allowed Midwestern to climb out of a double-figure halftime deficit.

After two free throws and a Mustang layup kept the Mustang lead at one, Tarleton's Lisa Parker forced a turnover which led to a pair of Peyton Adamson free throws to give the TexAnns their first lead since the 5:41 mark of the second half. MSU answered with a reverse layup on the other end to retake the lead 58-57 with 2:18 left.

A TexAnn turnover led to a pair of MSU free throws, extending the MSU lead to three at 60-57 with 1:54 left.

Shelby Adamson immediately responded by earning a trip to the free throw line, where she sank two to bring the deficit back to one.

On the other end, MSU's leading scorer went just 1-2 from the charity stripe to make the score 60-58 before Shelby responded with 2-2 from the free throw line to tie the game 61-61 with 1:15 left in the game.

On the ensuing possession, Parker poked another ball free and Shelby made a diving play on the sideline to keep possession. The effort was converted into two points on the other end with a turnaround layup by Kiara Wright gave Tarleton a 63-61 advantage with 28 seconds left, forcing an MSU timeout.

Tarleton was forced to play the final four minutes without Shanae Lowrance and Wright with four fouls.

Parker again disrupted the MSU offense, forcing a tie ball which went to Tarleton. The TexAnns went 3-4 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the deal.

The game began in a sluggish fashion, however, as Tarleton had four missed field goals and five turnovers in the first seven minutes of the game.

Despite, the early struggles, the TexAnn defense held Midwestern in check as well. MSU held just a slim 11-8 lead with 13 minutes left in the opening half.

Peyton Adamson took matters into her own hands and drove the lane for a quick two points to start a quick 5-2 push. Morgan Stehling added a three-ball just minutes later to knot the score 13-13.

The Mustangs answered with four unanswered points to lead 17-13 with 10:43 left.

Stehling answered with a jumper to start a 8-0 Tarleton run, giving the TexAnns their biggest lead of the game at 21-17 with 8:21 left.

MSU added three points with 23 seconds left, but Peyton drained a three-ball with two ticks on the clock to give the TexAnns a 33-23 halftime lead.

At the final buzzer, Shelby was the team's leading scorer with 15. Monday was also the senior's 22nd birthday.
