No. 5 Texans head up to Canyon for meeting with Buffs

STEPHENVILLE - The Texans travel to Canyon to take on West Texas A&M Saturday night in the First United Bank Center at 6 p.m.  Tarleton is entering the game after already playing two hard-fought games this week and little rest, but the Texans are always fired up when they face the Buffs, who are 16-6 on the season and winners of four straight.

LAST WEEK
    The Texans (22-3, 13-2) overcame a 19-point deficit and a 16-point seond half deficit to take a 74-69 victory from Eastern New Mexico Wednesday night in Wisdom Gym.  Just 48 hours after a triple overtime thriller in Wichita Falls, Tarleton outscored the Greyhounds by 21 in the second half en route to their 22 victory of the season.  Fabian Wilson scored 26 points while Wes Dipprey added 12 points and 11 rebounds.

THIS YEAR
    On the season, Tarleton is shooting 47.3 percent from the floor, 31.8 percent from three-point land and 71.4 percent from the charity stripe.  The Texans are averaging 70.3 points per game and 35.8 rebounds per game.

HOLDING OFF OPPONENTS
    Opponent's are shooting just 37.2 percent overall and averaging 56.3 points per game against the Texans.  Tarleton is No. 1 in the nation in points allowed and field goal percentage allowed.

STATISTICAL LEADERS
    Chris Harrell leads the Texans with 13.0 points per game while Fabian Wilson adds 12.6 points and 7.0 rebounds per game.  Shedrick Haynes is contributing 10.8 points and 3.5 assists to Tarleton's effort and Wes Dipprey is chipping in 6.8 points and 6.0 boards.

SIZING UP THE OPPONENT
    West Texas A&M has traditionally been a very tough opponent for Tarleton and that is no different in Rick Cooper's squad this season.  The Buffaloes are 16-6 on the year, 10-5 in LSC play and third in the conference standings.  They also boast one of the toughest defenses in the league, second only to the Texans.
 
STOPPING THE BUFFS
    Overall, WTAMU is averaging 65.4 points per game and 48.7 percent shooting from the floor.  Defensively, the Buffs are holding opponents to 57.8 points and 41.0 percent shooting each game.
    WTAMU ranks near the top of most statistical categories, but leads the league in field goal percentage (.487), rebounding defense (27.5) and rebounding margin (+6.9).  Expect Saturday's contest to be physical and low scoring.

WHO TO LOOK FOR
    Donald Sims is one of the best talents in the LSC and is the No. 1 rebounder in the conference with 9.7 boards a game.  He also adds 14.4 points per game on the offensive end.  Kennon Washington is contributing 13.9 points per game, while Courtney Carr is chipping in 10.1 points.  Lionel Foster is the conference's No. 1 assist man with 7.8 each contest.

AMONG THE BEST
    The Texans are ranked near the top of almost every statistical category in the conference.
    Tarleton is No. 1 in scoring defense (56.3 ppg) and No. 1 in scoring margin (+14.0).  The Texans are also No. 1 in field goal defense (.372), No. 2 in three-point field goal defense (28.3) and No. 2 in rebounding defense (30.2).
    Individually, Chris Harrell is No. 11 in scoring (13.0 ppg), while Fabian Wilson is No. 3 in rebounding (7.0) and No. 7 in blocks (0.8).  Shedrick Haynes is No. 7 in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.1) as well as No. 8 in assists (3.4). Harrell and Coleman Furst rank in the top four in free throw percentage.

REMAINING IN THE RANKINGS
    Tarleton was ranked No. 8 in the NABC/NCAA Division II Preseason Polls and No. 1 in the Lone Star Conference Preseason poll.
    The Texans are now No. 5 in the nation and No. 2 in the LSC standings behind Midwestern St.

UPCOMING SCHEDULE
    The Texans will wrap up a hectic week in the LSC with their third game in six days at West Texas A&M.  After that, Tarleton will head to Angelo State next Wednesday.
