MAGNOLIA, ARK. – The Tarleton baseball team traveled to Magnolia, Arkansas to face the Muleriders for a weekend series and fell 3-2 in the opener.
The Texans entered the game with a 4-2 record and were looking to get back onto the winning path.
Both teams struggled to get in a rhythm offensively out of the gate, while the pitching was on-point for both teams. Southern Arkansas struck first in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of runs.
Tarleton responded in the sixth inning and tied the game up at 2-2. Back-to-back-to-back singles by Noah Ringenberger, Evan Robinson and Ethan Stuckly. Stuckly's hit scored Ringenberger to make it 2-1. Garrett Hardey then stepped up and tied the game with an RBI single to right center.
The Muleriders answered in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single run and that would be all they would need to sneak a victory away from the Texans.
Tarleton come up short in the final score despite out-hitting SAU 7-3. Stuckly finished the game 2-for-4 and an RBI while Hardey provided the other RBI and Ringenberger provided two more hits.
Texan starter Pete Perez (1-1) tossed all eight innings for Tarleton and had an outstanding performance on the mound. Perez gave up just three runs on three hits and struck out eight despite the loss.
Doug Shields (2-0) got the win for the Muleriders and also hurled the entire game for SAU.
Head Coach Bryan Conger discussed his team's performance.
“Tonight was a good college baseball game,” said Conger. “Both teams had opportunities and both teams took advantage of those chances for the most part. The kids played hard and showed some good signs of progress towards what we want to be.”
Tarleton will get another shot at Southern Arkansas Saturday at 3 p.m. in Magnolia, Ark.
