SAN ANTONIO - Tarleton (2-1) split the second day of the St. Mary's College Classic in San Antonio after struggling at the plate in game one and pouring on the offense in the second game.
Game 1: Tarleton 1, Southeastern Okla. 2
The TexAnns struggled at the dish in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader in San Antonio and dropped their first game of the season, 2-1 to Southeastern Oklahoma.
Tarleton got its lone run in the opening frame when Katie Welborn and Samantha Swanda hit back-to-back doubles with two outs in the bottom of the first.
This was Welborn's third hit in her fourth at-bat of the season, dating back to yesterday.
That 1-0 Tarleton lead held up over the first three frames as Randi Fentress held the Savage Storm in check - with help from Amber Sotelo who gunned down an attempted base stealer in the first inning.
Fentress ran into some trouble in the bottom of the third when a single and a pair of wild pitches moved the runner to third base, but the sophomore battled to get a groundball to second base and strand the runner.
The Storm struck for a quick run in the fourth inning on a solo blast to left field to knot the score 1-1.
Tarleton had a chance to break through in the top of the sixth.
A Welborn single, Swanda walk and Arianna Rodriguez single loaded the bases for the TexAnns with two down. A fielder's choice to third, however, ended the rally.
SEOSU got the winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out ground ball to second.
The TexAnns went down in order in the top of the seventh.
Rodriguez and Welborn each went 2-3 while Swanda was 1-2 with a walk and an RBI. Courtney Vroman also had a pinch hit single.
Fentress went the distance for Tarleton and earned the tough-luck loss allowing two runs on five hits and three walks while striking out two.
Game 2: St. Edward's 2, Tarleton 8
Highlighted by a four-run fourth inning, the TexAnns used an offensive explosion to back Samantha Swanda and beat St. Edward's 8-2 Friday.
Welborn continued her torrid pace at the plate by getting the TexAnns on the board in the first inning for the third straight game.
After a lead-off walk by Abi Tammen in the bottom of the first inning, Welborn recorded her fifth hit in seven at-bats this season with an RBI single to center.
After two wild pitches moved Welborn to third, Swanda helped her own cause singled to left to score Welborn and give Tarleton a 2-0 lead after one.
After posting blanks in the top half of the next two innings, Swanda struck again at the plate with a solo blast to left to make it 3-0 in the third.
In the fourth, Tarleton pieced together four runs with two away to blow the game wide open.
With two down, Bailee Mauldin recorded her first hit as a TexAnn then immediately stole second.
Following an Alexandria Orf walk, Tammen drove in Mauldin on a base hit to left center. The Tammen single was followed by a Shelby Tinklepaugh RBI double and a 2-RBI single by Welborn.
St. Edward's got their two runs in the ensuing inning, and were pushing for more but Tarleton got the final out at the plate to stop a two-out rally.
An RBI single by Orf in the bottom of the fifth to score Vroman from second base made for the final score as Swanda shut down the Hilltoppers in the bottom of the seventh for her second complete game victory in two days.
Welborn went 2-4 with three RBIs for her third straight multi-hit game of the young season, while Swanda was 3-4 with two RBIs and her first home run of 2012.
Mauldin and Orf also had two hits each while Tammen and Tinklepaugh had the other Tarleton hits.
From the circle, Swanda went the distance, earning the win, allowing two runs on seven hits and striking out four.
Tarleton will complete the St. Mary's tournament with a pair of games Saturday, beginning with Rollins College at 10 a.m. and finishing with Texas-Permian Basin at 2 p.m.
