Texans prepare for weekend tournament at Texas-Permian Basin

STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton baseball team will travel to Odessa to take on a trio of opponents over the weekend as part of the Texas-Permian Basin Classic.  The event will take place Friday and Saturday with the Texans playing two games both days.

On Friday, Tarleton will start at 10:30 a.m. against No. 27 Incarnate Word (0-0) followed up by a contest against at 2 p.m. against New Mexico Highlands (0-0).  On Saturday, the Texans will face host Texas-Permian Basin (1-2) at 11 a.m. then wrap-up the weekend against Eastern New Mexico (0-0) at 2:15 p.m.

Tarleton is 3-0 on the season and coming off a season-opening sweep of McMurry this past weekend.  As a team, the Texans are batting a .202 average and have an LSC-leading 1.08 ERA.

Andy Wolfe has a .429 average and a .600 on-base percentage.  Noah Ringernberger has contributed a .364 average and a team-high four hits through three games while Evan Robinson has two RBI's, including the game-winner against McMurry last Saturday.

The pitching staff got off to a strong start this year led by junior transfer Pete Perez, who was named LSC Pitcher of the Week on Tuesday.  Perez (1-0) pitched six shutout innings, giving up just one hit and striking out six.  Tanner Ross also picked up a win on the mound in relief, while Britt Robertshaw earned both a win and a save against McMurry.

As for Tarleton's opponents, only the Falcons of UTPB have seen any action in 2012.  Incarnate Word will have their season opener against the Texans, a team they saw five times last season.  Tarleton will be looking to get payback after the Cardinals eliminated the Texans from both the LSC tournament and the NCAA tournament last year.

New Mexico Highlands will also begin their 2012 campaign against Tarleton, while UTPB will make the Texans their fifth contest of the season.  The Falcons lost two of three against Texas A&M-International last weekend.  Tarleton will end the tournament against Eastern New Mexico, a team the Texans will see again in March as part of conference play.

Times and dates are subject to change, but clear skies are in the forecast this weekend in Odessa.
