PORTALES, N.M. - For the fifth time this season, the Texan baseball team conquered the Greyhounds of Easter New Mexico with a 13-6 decision on Sunday.
Head coach
Bryan Conger recorded his 100th career victory at Tarleton as the Texans routed ENMU in the final game of the series.
Tarleton once again was unstoppable on offense, compiling 13 runs on 14 hits in the nine-inning contest.
ENMU started the scoring in the bottom of the first, but by the next time they would plate a run, Tarleton would already have 11 of their own.
The Texans got on the board in the second inning on
Ryan Small's RBI single up the middle.
Tarleton would add two more runs with Jonathan Scmitz's RBI single in the fourth and
Ethan Stuckly's RBI single in the fifth.
With a 3-1 lead, the Texans were still in a battle with the Greyhounds. But in the sixth inning, Tarleton would change that with eight runs.
The marathon inning began with
Garrett Hardey's RBI single to left. Andy Wolfe then followed with a two-run single to center.
A ENMU pitching change did nothing to stifle the offense as
Ty Crump drew a bases-loaded walk. Stuckly then added his second RBI single of the day, followed by Schmitz's two-run single.
Small capped off the inning with his single to left that plated Stuckly. After the dust settled, it was an 11-1 contest.
The Greyhounds managed a three-run bottom half of the sixth, but by then it was too late.
Tarleton piled on two more runs in the seventh thanks to Crump's sacrifice fly and Stuckly's RBI single.
ENMU got two runs in the bottom of the ninth, but the comeback attempt was futile.
The Texans improved to 11-6 on the year and 4-0 in Lone Star Conference play with a 13-6 final.
Kyle Supak started off the game for Tarleton, who used six different pitchers to down the Greyhounds. He went three innings giving up just one run on three hits.
Tanner Ross (2-0) earned the victory in relief after his no-hit, shutout fourth.
David Diaz saw his first action as a Texan after battling back from Hodgkin's Lymphoma and pitched a perfect inning in relief.
Joseph Rubalcaba and
Britt Robertshaw were also effective out of the bullpen for Tarleton with two innings of work each.
Offensively, Small led the way with a 4-for-5 outing with two RBI's. Stuckly and Scmitz recored three RBI's each while Scmitz was a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate. Stuckly finished the contest 4-for-6. Wolfe and Crump chipped in two RBI's.
Conger talked about the series win after the game.
"We are very proud of the kids and their effort this weekend," said Conger. "To go on the road in the conference and win four games is extremely tough to do. The good news is they know we have areas to improve in and they are committed to working the process."
Conger also discussed Diaz's return to baseball.
"It was awesome to see David on the mound today," said Conger. "With everything he has been through, to watch him get to compete today was really neat."
The Texans will return to action on Tuesday, March 20 at Texas Wesleyan.
