STEPHENVILLE - The Texan baseball team started competition in the ACU Whitten Classic on Friday on a positive note with a 7-0 win over Cameron.
Tarleton (6-5) is back on the winning track with two straight wins, and defeated Cameron (10-6) in the first of three games this weekend.
The Texans got on the board in the top of the third with a trio of runs.
Ethan Stuckly roped an RBI single to right to open the scoring. Stuckly then scored on a fielder's choice, followed by
Ryan Small, who scored on a throwing error.
With a 3-0 lead, Tarleton took advantage of the momentum in their favor by adding two more runs in the fifth. Stuckly continued to cause problems for the Aggies and put a two-run blast over the right field fence to push the Texans' lead to 5-0.
Adding insult to injury, Tarleton scored another pair of runs in the eighth.
Evan Robinson added a two-run single to center to cap off the scoring for the Texans, who finished with a 7-0 victory.
Pete Perez (2-1) had another outstanding performance on the mound with eight shutout innings, giving up just four hits and striking out 10 batters.
Austin Coble pitched the ninth and tossed a perfect inning.
Stuckly led the way offensively with a 2-for-4 day, three RBI's and two runs scored. Robinson added two RBI's and
Ryan Small scored twice.
The Aggies were held to just four hits in the game and left eight men stranded.
Head coach
Bryan Conger talked about the performance.
"The kids played well today," said Conger. "Proud of the way they were into the game. As they continue to grow as a team and get better at grinding one pitch at a time, they have the ability to be a good team."
Tarleton will return to action on Saturday when they face Eastern New Mexico at 1:05 p.m.
