STEPHENVILLE - After a week of recovering from a long weekend tournament in Denton, the Tarleton TexAnns (14-7) are ready to put tourney action behind them and begin Lone Star Conference action - starting with the No. 2 West Texas A&M Lady Buffs tonight.
Tarleton, despite dropping their last two games by a combined three runs, has been rolling lately by winning 10 of their last 13 games while WT has won just one of its last three.
Leading the Lady Buffs this season offensively are Kim LeComte and Meghan Brown. LeComte, a reigning first-team all-conference outfielder, is hitting .422 this season with four triples, two homers and 13 RBIs while Brown is a .375 hitter with four roundtrippers and 18 RBIs.
Tarleton will counter that offensive attack with a slew of sluggers, including Arianna Rodriguez, Katie Welborn and the reigning Newcomer of the Year Samantha Swanda.
Rodriguez has increased her batting average over .100 points over the past 15 days and is now leading the TexAnns with a .386 average, .743 slugging percentage and 20 RBIs. The junior shortstop also has five home runs, eight doubles and a triple.
Welborn is next on the team with a .364 average, three homers and 15 RBIs while Swanda also has five home runs, 19 RBIs and a .652 slugging percentage.
These high-powered offenses could be met with some difficult pitching in this series.
In the circle for WT will be the team's leading hurler, Marci Womack. Womack is 7-1 with a 1.58 average this season and threw the fourth no-hitter in WT history Feb. 10.
After Womack, however, the pitching has struggled.
The next highest ERA on the team is 3.94 while WT's other two pitchers are sitting at 7.00 and 8.08.
Tarleton will counter will the trio of Swanda, Randi Fentress and Kirby Crow.
Swanda (2.33) holds a slim lead over Fentress (2.78) for the top ERA on the team while Crow is at a solid 3.34 in five appearances. Swanda and Fentress have also combined for 130 strikeouts in 130 innings.
Tarleton leads the all-time series 12-8.
This high-powered series begins tonight under the lights at Tarleton's Softball Complex at 5 & 7 p.m. with the series finale set for tomorrow at 1 p.m.
