STEPHENVILLE - The Tarleton baseball team will host West Texas A&M this weekend for a four-game Lone Star Conference series at the Cecil Ballow Baseball Complex. Both teams are 4-0 in league play and tied atop the LSC standings.
The Texans are coming off a big series sweep of Eastern New Mexico this past weekend in Portales, N.M. in which they outscored the Greyhounds 53-16.
This season, Tarleton is hitting for a .279 average, a .387 slugging percentage and a .382 on-base percentage. The Texans are also 33-of-49 in stolen base attempts and post a .949 fielding percentage.
Andy Wolfe, the reigning LSC Hitter of the Week, is leading the team with a .419 average to go with 12 RBI's, 10 runs scored and six stolen bases.
Ethan Stuckly is adding 14 RBI's and a .386 average, while
Garrett Hardey leads the team with 15 runs driven in. Tarleton has 25 doubles, six triples and seven home runs on the season.
The pitching staff for the Texans has a combined ERA of 3.73 compared to opponents' 5.58 mark. Tarleton is led by juniors
Pete Perez and
Matt Buckmaster, who both have 3-1 record, sub-3.00 ERA's and 25-plus strikeouts. Perez has two complete games under his belt while Buckmaster and Joseph Aquino have one.
Britt Robertshaw has both of Tarleton's saves this season.
West Texas A&M will be one of Tarleton's most formidable opponents this season. The Buffs are red-hot after winning their last eight contests. At 16-5, 4-0, WTAMU is upset Tarleton on its home turf and take over the top spot in the LSC.
Overall, the Buffs are hitting a .359 average, a .563 slugging percentage and a .438 on-base percentage. They have 18 home runs, 11 triples and 59 doubles on the season.
WTAMU is led by LSC Preseason Player of the Year Jess Cooper, who has 24 RBI's, five home runs and 20 runs scored to go with his .333 average. Jordan Easom has added 31 RBI's and 12 doubles while Patrick Ramirez is batting .465 through 17 games. The Buffs are not overly dangerous on the base paths with 13 stolen bases, but they do post a .957 fielding percentage.
The pitchers have recorded a 5.12 ERA as a team with two complete games and four saves. Carlos Maese has been strong in the closing role with a 2-0 record, three saves and has yet to allow a run this season. Justin Kuks is 4-0 in the starting role while Billy Gonzalez is 3-0 out of the bullpen. Kuks also leads the team with 32 strikeouts.
Friday's game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m., while Saturday's doubleheader and Sunday's single game are slated to start at 1 p.m. both days.
