Rodriguez passes Petersma as all-time HR leader, but TexAnns fall

- Box Score: Game 1

- Box Score: Game 2

STEPHENVILLE – Arianna Rodriguez became Tarleton's all-time home run leader Friday night, but Tarleton (29-16, 14-8) was swept by No. 12 Angelo State (37-8, 16-4) in the final home doubleheader of the season.

Game 1: Angelo 10, Tarleton 4

Tarleton scored the first four runs of the game, but Angelo rallied back to scored 10 unanswered and defeat the TexAnns in the first game of the doubleheader, 10-4.

After Samantha Swanda worked around a leadoff single in the top of the first, the TexAnns struck for the first run of the game in the next half-inning.

Arianna Rodriguez legged out a one-out double when a blooper dropped in front of the sliding left fielder. The junior shortstop then took advantage of a lobbed throw back to the pitcher and swiped third base.

Katie Welborn drove in Rodriguez two pitches later with a single to left field to put Tarleton up 1-0.

The TexAnns flexed their muscle in the bottom of the second when Kelsey Latta and Arianna Rodriguez took the Angelo pitcher deep to left field with two outs.

Rodriguez's two-run homer tied her with Alicia Petersma at the top of the all-time TexAnn home run list with 31. It was her 16th home run of the season and put Tarleton on top 4-0 after two.

Angelo took advantage of two Tarleton errors in the top of the third by plating three unearned runs.

The Rambelles added more to their side of the scoreboard in the fourth when a two-RBI double eventually led to three runs when the batter tried to advance to third on the throw home and the TexAnn run down attempt sent the ball off the runner's helmet and into the dugout.

Already leading 6-4, Angelo added another three runs on a three-run homer to left field in the fifth. They tacked on one more in the sixth to lead 10-4.

Swanda took the loss, pitching six innings while allowing 10 runs – six earned – with three walks and nine strikeouts. Kirby Crow pitched one inning of near perfect relief.

Rodriguez had two hits while Welborn, Swanda, Tammen and Latta had the rest of Tarleton's six hits.

Game 2: Angelo State 10, Tarleton 3

Angelo State poured on seven runs in the eighth inning in the second game of Friday's doubleheader to complete the sweep of Tarleton with a 10-3 win.

Tarleton battled through a pitcher's duel through most of the game but couldn't overcome a rough extra frame.

The TexAnns had their chance to strike first in the bottom of the first, but a double play and a pick-off at second base ended any threat the TexAnns could muster.

Otherwise, the pitchers kept the offenses in check over the first two innings, but Angelo broke the scoring barrier with a home run in the top of the third to lead 1-0.

In the bottom of the third, Swanda put the TexAnns on the board with her 16th home run of the season and 30th of her career with a three-run job to dead center to put the TexAnns up 3-1 after three.

Angelo threatened to put more runs on the board in the fifth when the first two batters of the inning reached via singles, but Randi Fentress battled back to get a three-pitch strikeout, a pop-up to the catcher and a ground ball to short to keep the game 3-1.

The Rambelles would not go away, however, as a two-run homer in the top of the sixth knotted the game at 3-3. Tarleton got a two-out double by Fentress, but couldn't bring her around to score.

In the seventh, Angelo led off the inning with an infield single and then moved the runner to second with a sacrifice bunt. Fentress escaped the jam with a strikeout and a pop-up to Orf at second.

The Rambelles took the lead in extra innings after a leadoff hit batter and a walk led to an RBI single down the left field line, chasing Fentress from the game. They would go on to add six more.

Tarleton got a two-run double by McKaylee Pittman and a three-run bomb by Rodriguez to pull within two runs and make for a valiant comeback attempt.

Rodriguez's homer made her the all-time home run leader in TexAnn history, passing Petersma.

Fentress pitched seven innings allowing six runs on nine hits while striking out six. Crow was touched up for four runs – two earned – in just one-third of an inning. Swanda came back in to get the last two outs.

Nine different players had one hit each for the TexAnns, including big three-run homers by Swanda and Rodriguez.

Tarleton will try to salvage game three from Angelo at 1 p.m. Saturday. A hot dog cookout will take place at 12 p.m. and will be hosted by the Texan Club.
