TexAnns battle, fall just short on Senior Day

- Box Score

STEPHENVILLE – For the second straight game, Tarleton (29-17, 14-9) and Angelo State (38-8, 19-4) went into extra innings and for the second straight game Angelo came out on top, defeating the TexAnns 7-4.

For the first time this season, Tarleton's Arianna Rodriguez led off for the TexAnns and did not disappoint as the first hitter – lacing a double to the left center gap.

She eventually came around to score after a sacrifice bunt by Alex Orf and a wild pitch to put Tarleton up 1-0 after one.

After two innings of scoreless softball, Rodriguez gave the fans a taste of déjà vu – ripping a two-bagger off the left field wall then advancing to third on an Orf groundout with just one away. Unfortunately, the TexAnns were unable to get her across but still led 1-0 after three.

Swanda was dealing from the pitchers circle over the first three innings, keeping the Rambelles off the scoreboard for three innings with just one walk and a strikeout.

Angelo finally broke through in the fourth, however, when a leadoff walk came around to score on an RBI single to right field. Angelo had another runner reach third, but Swanda stopped the bleeding with a swinging strikeout.

Tarleton put together a two-out rally in the bottom of the fifth to break the 1-1 tie.

Rodriguez worked a walk and was followed by an Orf double down the left field line to put runners at second and third with two away.

Katie Welborn followed up with a sharp line drive up the middle to plate the pair and put Tarleton up 3-1. Swanda laced a double to left center to move Welborn to third, but no more would come of the rally as a pop up ended the inning.

Angelo answered right back in the sixth with a pair of runs to knot the score at 3-3.

In the bottom of the sixth, Tarleton took the lead right back with a clutch two-out single to right field by pinch hitter Hannah Hancock to plate Amber Sotelo from second base.

A leadoff walk in the top of the seventh came back to hurt the TexAnns as Angelo tied the game at 4-4.

With runners on the corners and nobody out, however, Swanda and the defense buckled down to hold the Rambelles to a tie getting three grounders to the infield and holding the runner at third to end the threat.

Tarleton had runners on the corners with two away in the bottom of the seventh, but a falling snag by the Angelo first baseman took away a base hit by pinch hitter Randi Fentress to send the game to extras.

Angelo immediately took the lead in the eighth when a hit batter came around to score and give the Rambelles a 5-4 lead. They added two more on a two-RBI single back up the middle to lead 7-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth.

McKaylee Pittman had a one-out double in the bottom of the eighth, but the TexAnns could do nothing with it as Angelo went on to win.

Swanda took the loss after pitching 7.1 innings allowing seven runs on three walks and four strikeouts. Fentress pitched 0.2 innings of relief allowing two hits and a walk.

The top four batters for the TexAnns combined for six of Tarleton's nine hits with Rodriguez and Swanda posting two each. Hancock, Bailee Mauldin and Pittman had the other three.

After the game, Tarleton hosted senior day in honor of seven TexAnn seniors – Abigail Tammen, Marcie Rodriguez, Kirby Crow, Swanda, Sotelo, Welborn and Orf.

Tarleton will host Texas Woman's Tuesday at 6 p.m. for the last home game of the season.
