SAN ANTONIO – Tarleton (30-19, 15-11) snapped a four-game skid and won its 30
th game of the season with a doubleheader split on the road against Incarnate Word (26-22, 11-15).
Game 1: Tarleton 8, Incarnate Word 4
Tarleton ended a four-game losing streak with an 8-4 win in the first game of Friday's road doubleheader against Incarnate Word.
All the scoring for Tarleton came in bunches, but it was enough to double-up the Cardinals who attempted to chip away that their deficit but came up just short.
Incarnate Word had its chance to strike first in the bottom of the opening inning when they loaded the bases with nobody out, but
Samantha Swanda struck out the side swinging to escape the threat.
Tarleton finally cracked the score column in the third when
Arianna Rodriguez singled with one away and later came around to score on
Katie Welborn's 13
th home run of the season that put the TexAnns on top 2-0.
Later in the inning with two away, Swanda singled, moved to second on a wild pitch and came around to score on an RBI single to left center by
Bailee Mauldin to lead 3-0.
Incarnate Word used a two-run homer in the ensuing half-inning to cut into the deficit and an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3.
Tarleton would answer, however, with a five-spot in the top of the fifth to put the game out of reach.
Rodriguez started the inning with her 15
th double of the season and came around to score when the sacrifice bunt by Alex Orf was overthrown by UIW.
After an error loaded the bases and a fielder's choice at the plate minimized the damage with two away,
McKaylee Pittman drove in Welborn with an RBI single up the middle before
Hannah Hancock cleared the bases with a pinch-hit double to the gap made the score 8-3.
UIW added a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh but got no more off Swanda who won her 16
th game of the season.
The senior pitcher threw her 20
th complete game of the season, allowing eight hits and four runs – one earned – with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Welborn and Rodriguez each had a multi-hit game while Swanda, Mauldin,
Abigail Tammen, Pittman and Hancock each had the rest of Tarleton's nine hits.
Game 2: Incarnate Word 4, Tarleton 2
In the nightcap, Tarleton was held to a two-run fourth inning as the Cardinals squeaked out a 4-2 win over the TexAnns to earn the doubleheader split.
The Cardinals struck first in the bottom of the opening frame with an RBI groundout and a two-out, RBI single to right field to lead 2-0.
After three perfect innings, the TexAnns broke through with their two-run fourth inning that started with a UIW error that allowed Rodriguez to reach.
Orf followed up with a double to center to plate Rodriguez and later came around to score the final TexAnn run on an RBI single by Welborn.
The Cardinals took their final lead of the game with a two-run homer to center field to lead 4-2.
After a leadoff single by
Randi Fentress in the seventh and a hit by pitch, the TexAnns stranded a pair in their final frame.
Fentress took the loss after pitching six innings allowing seven hits and four runs with one walk and two strikeouts.
Orf, Welborn, Tammen, Pittman, Fentress and
Kelsey Latta each had one hit in the contest for Tarleton's six total hits.
The TexAnns will play their regular season finale tomorrow at noon at Cardinal Field in San Antonio then turn their attention to the Lone Star Conference Championship Tournament, which begins in Denton next weekend.
