TexAnns split first day of season-opening tournament

GOLDEN, Colo. – After dropping a tough five-set match in the season opener, the Tarleton TexAnns (1-1) bounced back in the last game of the night at the Colorado Mines Oredigger Classic with a sweep against St. Joseph's College.

Tarleton battled back to force a game after dropping its first two sets of the season, but suffered a tough 17-15 season-opening loss in the fifth set.
 
Errors proved costly for the TexAnns in the first game, making 11 miscues for a 0.88 hitting percentage while the Lions landed 11 kills on just two errors for a .300 hitting percentage. The Lions edged out a 25-22 win in the opening set.
 
UAFS jumped out to a 2-0 start with a 25-15 win in the second set.
 
Tarleton clawed back into the match, however, landing 23 total kills over the next two sets and while UAFS combined for 22 errors over the third and fourth sets. The TexAnns won those sets 25-16 and 25-20.
 
In the fifth game, the TexAnns were 12 of 30 on kill attempts but committed seven errors while UAFS was just five of 21 with only one offensive miscue en route to the victory.
 
Tarleton outside hitter Stacie Murrah landed 17 kills on 30 attempts for a team-high hitting percentage of .433 while Nikki McNorton landed 12 kills from the middle.
 
Danielle Barker led the team with 38 assists while Emily Klein was the top digger with 30 in five sets.

In the nightcap, Tarleton wasted no time in getting into the win column by sweeping St. Joseph's College.
 
Tarleton dominated the match as the TexAnns took the first set 25-20 before holding the Pumas to under 20 points in each of the final two sets. The TexAnns won the second set 25-19 before finishing off St. Joe's 25-17 to wrap up the first day.
 
McNorton led the way for Tarleton with 11 kills while Ashley Rine picked up six kills on 11 attempts and a .455 hitting percentage from the outside.
 
Barker led the team with 20 assists while Marissa Banda added 17 while Klein's 14 digs topped the team just ahead of Katie Covell, who recorded 13 digs.
 
Tarleton will return to action tomorrow against Wayne State College at 12 p.m. and tournament host Colorado Mines at 4:30 p.m.
