SAN ANGELO – Tarleton (7-4, 2-1) saw its five-game winning streak come to a halt Tuesday night with a tough 3-0 loss at the hands of No. 11 Angelo State (9-2, 3-0) at Stephens Arena.
Tarleton fell behind early in the first set after four errors and four kills allowed ASU to open the set on an 8-2 run. The two TexAnn points came on a kill by
Stacie Murrah and an Angelo State service error.
With ASU leading 24-17, Tarleton made a late push with a kill by Ashely Rine, off a set from
Kelsey Raglin, and a pair of ASU errors. The Rambelles would not be denied, however, as they landed a kill to earn the final point and the first set 25-20.
Tarleton stayed within one point of the Rambelles over the first 13 points at 6-7 on the strength of two
Nikki McNorton kills, a Murrah kill and three ASU miscues.
ASU extended their lead from there to 12-7, but after a McNorton kill gave the serve back to Tarleton
Danielle Barker served up three straight points to force an Angelo timeout at 11-12. The teams split the next four points.
With the Rambelles leading 14-13, Angelo went on a 7-0 run before Murrah landed a kill to break the streak at 21-14. That would prove to be the last Tarleton point of the set as ASU scored the next four to win 25-14.
In the third set, the TexAnns got off to a strong start with a quick 7-4 lead on the strength of two
Katie Covell kills, one McNorton kill and four ASU miscues.
Tarleton maintained a three-point lead until the 10-7 mark before ASU struck for three straight to knot the score at 10-10. The teams split the next four points for a 12-12 tie.
ASU went on an 8-5 push to lead 20-17, but despite a kill by
Kaylea Beck and two Rambelle errors Angelo went on a 5-3 push at the end to claim the set.
McNorton led the TexAnns with nine kills, a .389 hitting percentage and 11.5 points while Covell added seven kills of her own. Murrah had five kills. As a team, Tarleton hit only .097 for the match, including a (-).048 in the second set.
Barker led the team with 19 assists while
Emily Klein (17) and
Kelsey Raglin (12) cracked double figures in digs.
This loss marks the second road loss this season. Both of Tarleton's road losses have been to ranked opponents.
The TexAnns remain on the road this week as they are slated to visit Abilene Christian Friday night at 7 p.m.
