TexAnns cruise in 28-point rout of Texas A&M-Commerce

Wright passes Jones for rebound record in school's 18-year NCAA history

Kiara Wright passed JoAnne Jones for eighth place on the school's all-time rebounding list and became the school record-holder for rebounds in Tarleton's NCAA era.
Box Score COMMERCE – A trio of TexAnns scored in double figures to lead Tarleton past Texas A&M-Commerce Saturday afternoon 79-51 at the Fieldhouse.
 
Tarleton leads the all-time series 22-16 and has now won five straight against the Lions.
 
After a Peyton Adamson jumper got the TexAnns on the scoreboard first, the Lions got their first points to bring the score to its only tie of the afternoon at 2-2.
 
At 16:26, Brianna Bledsoe went to the free throw line and knocked down a pair to start a 7-0 TexAnn run that put Tarleton up 9-2 just four minutes into the contest.
 
Over the next 3:36, Tarleton extended its lead to 13 points before a quick 6-0 Commerce push brought the Lions within seven at 19-12 with 10:05 left in the opening half.
 
A Kiara Wright free and a Keyra Johnson jumper on the next two possessions put the TexAnns back up by double figures immediately. They would not let the Lions within single digits over the rest of the half and pushed their lead to as many as 14. Tarleton went into halftime with a 39-26 lead.
 
Tarleton wasted no time picking up where they left off, opening the new half on an 11-2 run to take a 50-28 lead just 3:29 into the new period.
 
The Lions never got closer than 20 points over the rest of the way while the TexAnns pushed their lead to as many as 36 en route to the victory.
 
Wright recorded her first career double-double against Texas A&M-Commerce with 21 points and 13 rebounds. She is averaging 27.5 points per game over the last two contests.
 
Her first rebound of the game – a defensive board at 18:21 in the first half – pushed her past JoAnne Jones for eighth place on the all-time rebounding list and made her the school's all-time leader in rebounds in the 18-year NCAA era.
 
Also scoring in double figures was Adamson with 17 and Johnson with 12. Adamson is now averaging 17.3 points per game against the Lions in her Tarleton career while Johnson's 12 – all in the first half – were a career high.
 
Tarleton shot 51 percent from the floor and 20 percent from downtown while holding the Lions to just 28 percent from the floor and 0-4 from beyond the arc.
 
The TexAnns will return to action a week from today with their second straight game against Texas A&M-Commerce. The Lions visit Wisdom Gym for a 5 p.m. game Saturday.
