Davene Carter led an entourage of Texan players that scored in double figures as he led the way with 20 points and 13 rebounds in a 118-54 season-opening win over Southwestern Adventist Saturday evening at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville.
The Texans made 42-of-68 to shoot .618 percent from the field and 13-of-24 (.542) from the three-point line en route to scoring its most points in a game since tallying 112 points against Southwestern Adventist back in 1995.
Tarleton's .618 percent from the field is .080 points better than last season's high shooting percentage of .538 that was recorded on Jan. 19 in a home game against West Texas A&M. It also marks the highest shooting percentage from a Tarleton team since shooting .619 percent against A&M-Commerce back on Jan. 4, 2007.
Along with Carter's team-high 20 points and career-high-tying 13 boards,
Coleman Furst added 18 points and six assists and De'Andre Upchurch finished with 16 points. Upchurch was 4-for-7 from downtown and 6-for-11 from the field.
Newcomers
Tashawn Mabry and Mohammed Lee had great debuts for the Texans as well on Saturday, with Mabry pouring in 14 points and Lee adding 10 points. Last season's Lone Star Conference Defensive Player of the Year,
Jon Cathey-Macklin, had 10 points on the night to go along with his six rebounds and a pair of blocks, while
Chuck Guy dished out a game-high eight assists on the night.
The Texan defense limited the Knights to just 21-of-60 (.350) shooting, while committing just 12 personal fouls on the evening. Tarleton had five blocks and six steals as well.
Tarleton used a 31-8 run to open the game and then later used a 12-6 run to take a commanding 43-14 lead with 6:38 left to play in the first half. SWAU managed to close out the half with 26 points, but the Texans went into the locker room with a 66-30 halftime lead.
SWAU scored just six points in the first nine minutes of the second half and by that time, Tarleton had pushed its lead to 97-36 following a three-pointer from Mabry with just under 11 minutes left to play.
Cathey-Macklin's layup with 9:38 left to play pushed Tarleton over the 100-point barrier, giving the Texans a 101-41 lead.
The Texans will return to action next Friday, Nov. 15, when the team hosts the 2013 Texan Tip-Off Classic. The tournament, which is sponsored by Whataburger, will be held Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16. The Texans will face St. Edward's on Friday at 7 p.m. before closing out the tournament against Bloomfield (N.J.) on Saturday at 7 p.m. as well.
