TexAnns use second-half surge to coast past Cardinals

Adamson's 25 points lead Tarleton over UIW

Peyton Adamson was 5-8 from 3-point territory and a perfect 10-10 from the charity stripe in Saturday's 88-74 win over Incarnate Word.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Led by 25 points and a record-setting night at the free throw line from Peyton Adamson, Tarleton overcame a halftime deficit to defeat Incarnate Word 88-74 on Play 4 Kay Pink Out night at Wisdom Gym Saturday.

Trailing by one at halftime, Brianna Bledsoe opened the second half of play with an old-fashioned 3-point play to give Tarleton (17-5, 13-3) a 37-35 lead.

After UIW (15-7, 11-5)  tied the game at 37-37, Cheyenne Berry hit a layup with started a big second half run for Tarleton. The Berry bucket was the beginning of a 11-1 run over the next 4:25 to give Tarleton its first double-digit lead of the game at 48-38.

The Cardinals cut it back to six at the 13:45 mark, but a 3-pointer by Bledsoe started a 10-3 TexAnn run which pushed the lead back to 13 at 10:55.

Tarleton pushed its lead to as many as 16 and never led by less than eight the rest of the way. The Cardinals cut their deficit to eight with just over two minutes left, but Peyton Adamson put the game away with a 5-0 run of her own down the stretch.

Kiara Wright got the scoring started for the TexAnns with a layup at the 18:50 mark before UIW went on an 8-0 run to take an 8-2 lead 3:01 into the contest.

The TexAnns were forced to battle back as Bledsoe, Wright and Berry hit unanswered buckets to bring the game back even at 8-8. Neither team was able to build an extended lead over the next five minutes as UIW held a slim two-point lead at 10:50.

Incarnate Word pushed its lead to as many as seven in the first half with 4:19 left in the opening frame, but Tarleton answered with an 8-2 run over the last four minutes to trail just 35-34 at the break.

For the game, Tarleton was led once again by Adamson – who followed up her 30-point performance Wednesday with a 25-point effort against Incarnate Word. The junior guard was 5-12 from the floor and 5-8 from downtown.

Her 10-10 effort from the free throw line ties a school record for free throw percentage in a game with a minimum 10 attempts. She is tied with her current coach Misty Wilson (10-10; 11-11) and her sister, Shelby Adamson (14-14).

The other four starters also cracked double figures for Tarleton with Wright scoring 17 and grabbing 15 rebounds. Bledsoe (13), Berry (10) and Ashmore (11) were the others to score double digits. Ashmore's 11 were a career high.

The TexAnns will hit the road Wednesday for a trip north of the Red River to play Cameron in Aggie Gym at 6 p.m.
