Tarleton drops second straight, falls to Midwestern 71-63

Despite being one of several TexAnns limited due to foul trouble, Tarleton center Kiara Wright remains as the Division II National Leader in double-doubles with 19 this season.
Box Score STEPHENVILLE – Tarleton dropped its second straight game Saturday night, falling 71-63 to Midwestern State in Wisdom Gym.

This is the TexAnns' third loss in their last five games and the second loss in Wisdom Gym this season.

Peyton Adamson got the scoring started with a quick layup off the opening tip to put the TexAnns up 2-0 just nine seconds into the game. The layup propelled Tarleton to an early 6-2 lead.

MSU clawed backto take a 7-6 lead before Cheyenne Berry hit a layup to put Tarleton back on top and start a 7-0 TexAnn push – strengthened by an Adamson 3-ball and a Brianna Bledsoe layup.

After Midwestern pulled within four at 17-13, a Kiara Wright bucket started a 6-0 Tarleton run to put Tarleton up by double-figures at 23-13. A Mustang free throw made it a nine-point game but Morgan Ashmore drilled a 3-ball to make it a 12-point Tarleton advantage.

The TexAnns pushed that lead to as many as 13 with 2:09 to go, but the Mustangs answered with a 5-0 run over the final two minutes to cut the Tarleton lead to eight entering halftime.

The lead continued to shrink in the new half as MSU opened the new period with four unanswered points before a Berry layup pushed the lead back to six at 34-28.

The lead remained at six over the first 3:38 of the second half before MSU hit back-to-back buckets to make it a two-point game at 16:22.

Tarleton maintained its slim lead over the next five minutes and pushed to it five points at the 9:57 with back-to-back layups by Adamson and Erin Sims.

After the Sims bucket, however, Tarleton was held scoreless over the next 2:40 while Midwestern scored 12 unanswered to take a 53-46 lead. Adamson ended the skid with a layup at 7:17.

The TexAnns battled through three players – two starters – fouling out of the game but were never able to get closer than four points over the rest of the game.

Adamson led the team with 21 points while Wright had 11 points and 11 rebounds despite being sidelined due to foul trouble. Berry also had 10 points despite being limited by foul trouble and eventually fouling out of the game.

Bledsoe and Sims were the other TexAnns to foul out of the contest.

Tarleton will play its final home game of the season Wednesday night as the TexAnns host Eastern New Mexico at 6 p.m. in Wisdom Gym.
