Box Score ABILENE, Texas – Tarleton's
Alvaro Moreno went 3-for-5 at the plate with three runs batted in and
Miguel Ramirez (2-0) picked up his second straight win as the Texans downed Cameron 9-6 in non-conference action at the ACU/Whitten Inn Classic at Crutcher Scott Field on Friday.
Cameron put up the game's first run in the top of the second inning, but Tarleton countered with a three-run bottom of the third to take a two run lead.
Colten Boothe led off the inning with his second home run of the season, while
Evan Robinson and
Nico Moran each drove in runs as well.
The Aggies got back a run in the top of the third inning, but again, Tarleton countered in the bottom half of the frame and got that run back on Moreno's RBI-single up the middle that scored
Noah Ringenberger on the play.
The Texans put up another three-spot in the fourth inning, collecting runs on RBI-singles from
Jared Musgrove and Moran before Moreno drove in another run with his groundout to the shortstop.
Fola Lajide reached base on an error in the bottom of the seventh inning and three wild pitches later came around to score to make it an 8-2 game in favor of the Texans.
The Aggies got back to within two runs of the Texans in the top half of the eighth inning, scoring four runs on three hits in the inning, but Tarleton got an insurance run in the next at bat with Moreno's RBI-single through the left side of the infield.
Tarleton led 9-6 heading into the ninth inning and
Landon Thompson (S, 1) shutdown the Aggie bats to preserve the three-run victory and earn his first save of the season.
Ramierez gave up two runs on six hits in 6.1 innings. He walked two and struck out seven batters in the game. Thompson did not allow a hit in 2.0 innings of scoreless baseball.
The Texans improved to 8-6-1 overall on the season, while Cameron dropped to 3-8 overall.
Boothe finished the game with two hits on the day and
Rustin Thomas recorded a pair of hits on the day as well.
The Texans will be back in action tomorrow, taking on another Lone Star Conference team in non-conference action for the third day of the ACU/Whitten Inn Classic. Tarleton will face Eastern New Mexico in Abilene at 1 p.m.
Matt Buckmaster (2-1) is scheduled to take the hill for the Texans.
